Last night the Progressive Caucus held another town hall meeting at Malcolm X Community College to discuss the 2017 City Budget. The Progressive Caucus has held several of these events over the past few years to discuss the budgets with residents and businesses from across the City. Last night was another great event and we heard from community members throughout the city on a myriad of issues, including childcare, small business support, mental health clinic funding, policing training and legal issues, and many more.
Ms. Khalifa, a crossing guard in the Lakeview area, spoke up about the removal of crossing guards from the police department and the lack of support for school kids when there is not a backup person. Crossing guards also pushed to get back their police uniforms as opposed to the traffic management style shirts they are now being asked to wear. If you know you're crossing guards, ask the about this issue the next time you take your kids to school. A pastor from the southside spoke up about cleaning our city up, metaphorically and literally. As he said,
"Clean up our city and crime goes down, we owe it to our kids to create community & economic development."
Several parents also spoke to us about the importance and need for funding of daycares, and access to resources for all children to receive early learning and early childhood opportunities.
The budget meeting provided plenty of opportunities to discuss the budget. This year's budget will have many amendments offered Monday to attempt to change some flaws and issues brought up during the 2 weeks of budget hearings. You can view the mayor's budget here, and provide input to me at [email protected].

November is National Runaway Prevention Month |
Last week, we mentioned November was National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM).
During NRPM, the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) and its partners are raising awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and the issues that these young people face.
This week, NRS is asking you to take advantage of the Facebook filter trend. They have created a filter for you to use over your Facebook profile and other social media to show the millions of
youths that run away each year that they are not invisible and they are not alone.
Simply use this link to get to the Twibbon account for the NRS and convert your photo to show your support.
Another thing you can do is considering bidding at their online auction. From a chef night to airplane tickets to Broadway shows, this sale has it all. To find out what you can get by giving, click here.
For more information about National Ruanway Safeline, click here or give their number to someone who could use it 1-800-RUNAWAY.
