3D Character Layers
In films today,
has improved leaps and bounds. Lets look at what can make a high-detailed character's
stand out, and
that hero-level quality:
Layers: Having multiple layers of clothing achieves a great deal of visual depth, and allows for shadows to be created accurately, and edges are more pronounced, creating a higher level of detail even if the poly count is not astronomical.
Detailed Texture Map: A few dozen photos of your character that will be used for texture mapping can't match the higher levels of quality achievable by taking a few hundred photos, and spending the extra time texturing every surface detail from every angle versus distortion, and lack of detail in harder to reach places that aren't seen line-of-sight very easily. More time in photography can also allow for surface normals to be lifted through the photos onto the 3D model.
The amount of movement in a person's face is unique to them, and to observe their facial range of motion through
allows for very dynamic realistic expressions to be used as blend shapes.
Outfit Design: A variety of materials for the character to wear makes for the use of different shaders, which will flesh out the character as to not be flat and blend in, but stand out, and have light play differently on the materials.
Skin Quality: Pore detail shows up more clearly the older a person is, and so a younger person will not have the same micro-detail as someone older.
Eyes and Skin: The shaders responsible for making the eyes reflective yet realistic and not overly glossy can take a long time to dial in, and get right. Use real world reference, and even then the CG data may need to be tweaked past what we see in reality to appear correct on screen. The human skin shader can vary from person to person because of the thickness and thinness a character's skin may have, and the amount of light which is passing through will vary.
Larger Digital Assets
Larger digital assets refer to a lidar 3D Scanned models or modeling techniques built or a photogrametry as shot by photo, drones etc and run through special software.
We are building digital worlds for our digital entertainment space. As the call for cars of all kinds, all years and models are needed, along with trucks, trains, ships, airplanes and whatever else moves people.
There are also buildings both inside and out are needed along with houses, barns and other types of structures.
We also get the call for outside areas to be done, parks and wooded areas with clearings , streets, junk yards, pits etc.
As you can look and see the world around you, it is all up for grabs to be replicated into a computer to be another environment for your digital doubles in your next project.
Digital assets could also be props on the smaller side such as guns, knives, swords, bats, baseball glove, to hats and other items used or worn.
Digital assets either modeled, scanned or photo'd, are the products of our endeavor for stories today and in the future.
Virtual Reality on the Way or is it Here?
After a number of years I finally went back to Universal Studio's theme park. Wow! what a difference. The rides were like the motion rides of 10 -15 years ago with the moving seat but the big difference was the complete immersion of the environment. This appears to be the aim of The Oculus Rift but you are not wearing the enclosed device, plus you are in motion with incredible sound around you. Isn't this Virtual Reality?
OK so you need a few million to emulate this experience or maybe more than a few million.
This is wear the enclosed face mask will really save you a few bucks, but you need techs out there putting your world together for you and the sound system to give you the feeling of being there. More senses, more believable.
Along with new tech for Virtual Reality come new language like
VR equirectangular (see example below) cleanup. I was talking with someone else and they did not hear of it either and we both have been around VR and AR for a long time. I think it will be of use in a number of markets, perhaps the full theme park, or consumer entertainment at home instead of a TV.
Partially like at the theme part the tech has landed, now to integrate in our lives as consumers without crashing into each other. I guess that is AR. Which ever tech dominates we will be looking to help with digital assets.
