Ladies...Here WE Go!!!

In one month, waves of competitors will line up - one after another - to tackle the Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon.  We know you have been training for this day...and we know your expectations are high.  Rest assured, we are ready!  On July 17th, this race is about you!   We are prepared to make your day exceptional, catering to your needs and we are excited to see each athlete cross the finish line. We have worked hard, lining up sponsors that share your energy and we're excited about all the extras this race has for you.

Five years ago, I started this race for a lot of personal reasons and found the challenge of race directing to be gratifying.  I have a lot of people to thank for making this race as exceptional as it has been.  Without the help of the community, friends and of course YOU, this race would not be possible.  This past mothers day, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund named a $50,000 research grant after my mom, Carol Prager.  To the Baldwin Family and Executive Board thank you.  She was an exceptional person, with a huge heart and did so much for breast cancer survivors in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia with her organization, Women Supporting Women.  In my mom's final years, triathlon gave her and I an awesome opportunity to connect as she got to cheer for her son, and I got to appreciate her will, to be present at my races.  She is a big impetus for the existence of this race!

Along those lines, this year will be extra special for me, because we have a new member of our family and also the Gillie Girl Team.  On May 25th, this special little guy came into my life and will be joining me on the microphone as I welcome all our racers to the 2016 event.  I am pumped that our son Bear Michael Prager will get to watch dad in action, in hopes that I can be as much of a person of inspiration in his life...as all of you racing in this event have been for me.  Don't hesitate to go say hello to Bear!!!  For everyone who has participated in this race, thank you, it has been a very gratifying and rewarding event to direct.  And to Carissa, thanks for all your help behind the scenes...and sorry you can't race this year  (-:  Maybe next year huh??

So in closing as we get ready for the final month of race preparation, here is what you need to know about this race.  We will put out more emails with race details as we get closer.   The roads are in the best shape in our 5 years of racing.  The course is marked better than ever so you won't get lost while training.  Water temperatures are the coolest I remember at this time of the year, so we are on track to be a wetsuit legal race.  The teams of sponsors have done more than ever for our athletes and I think you will be excited about your race bags, t-shirts, finishers glasses, finishers medals and the food and entertainment that come with racing at Gillie, year after year.

When the idea of this race came to fruition, letters were sent out to the Town of Camillus and the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund requesting their interest in supporting this event.  Immediately both Eric Bacon and Beth Baldwin reached back out and we immediately set everything in motion to get the race underway.

Symbolic is an important piece to this race.  The 2 loop swim was symbolic of the Ironman Triathlon in Lake Placid, the home of the first Ironman brand events.  Since both events occurred on the same day in the first year, we tipped our hats to that event - and mimicked their double loop swim.

Likewise, Women Supporting Women (the breast cancer organization started by Carol Prager and 2 other women in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia) and the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund were both home grown organizations that gave back to their community.  But while Carol Prager's organization directly helped support the women with cancer, the Baldwin Fund help conduct the research for the treatments that helped those women.   The irony that the strive for 'one more month...one more month till the next medicine hits that market' is what gave Carol Prager an extra 13-15 years of life and that is what the Baldwin Fund represents.

The organization that gives life and years became an obvious organization that the Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon needed to bond with.  Now, 5+ years since that first conversation, we are sitting very close to that $100,000 in total donations that the Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon has been able to provide the Baldwin Fund to help conduct breast cancer research.   In total, 59 - $50,000 research grants have been awarded, all of which were conducted locally in our community and in all likelihood resulted in some procedure, protocol or treatment that has extended the life of one of your family, friends or community members.   We would like to thank the Baldwin Fund for all of their support and congratulate them on all they do and yes, 'Together we will find a cure!'   Please visit their website and attend events that support the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund.

Strategies For Racing At
The Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon

The Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon is an amazing course.   It includes a double loop 1/4 mile swim (total 1/2 mile) with a beach re-entry between loops.   A 14.7 mile scenic bike course and a 3.1 mile spectator friendly run course.  Our goal was to create a course that was fair for beginners and experienced triathletes.  The purpose of this segment is to help athletes develop a plan to race at Gillie safely and successfully.

On the swim - We have 6 lifeguards, 6 kayaks and a handful of paddleboards on the water.
Athletes will go off in 7 minute intervals.   This enables athletes to get a significant launch before another group heads into the water.  Comfort in knowing that each athlete will have their own space helps each participant find their swim stroke and maintain their own race.   The beach re-entry gives athletes a short break before they start the second lap.   For strong swimmers, this is a neat change, but for weaker swimmers, this enables a chance to grab your breathe before you start the second loop.   Swimmers are not allowed to advance themselves on the kayaks and paddleboards, but they can use those devices to regain their composure before swimming again.  Also, athletes should be aware that they will be able to touch on the back side of the lake.   We do encourage every athlete to learn to swim 1/2 mile unbroken before the race, but there is comfort knowing that there is a spot that an athlete can pause and re-establish a game plan.  That said, we ask that swimmers that are not swimming avoid those whom are.

Bike Course - We have the best roads for riding this year.  In the last 2 years, virtually all the
roads on the course have been repaved.  There are no major elevations on the course, but athletes will find that most elevations are superseeded by a small descent.  This allows athletes momentum on the up portion...take advantage of that acceleration to minimize the extra work.  These roads are well marked and we have a significant number of volunteers, police, fire and rescue squad on this course.   We have Syracuse Bicycle and motorcyclists on course to help you if you are in a jam - flat tire or other mechanical issue.  This out and back course is scenic and exciting.  Manage your energy on the way out and back.  The last mile back into the park will challenge you.   It is not a steep hill, but the final mile is a false flat, meaning it is slightly uphill and will heavily fatigue your legs if your energy is not managed properly.

The Run - The run course, like any triathlon is the most challenging, because it is the last event.  Manage your energy getting out of the park.   Athletes typically try to outrun their first mile and then they pay for it after that point.   Allow your legs to come back to you in the first mile.  Once you get onto Sands Road, find a good stride but manage your efforts, in preparation for the return back to the park.  The way out on Sands Road is a rolling downhill, which means the way back is a rolling uphill.   There is one hill that you will want to manage smartly - walking if necessary, but the rest of the run is pretty fair.  Save one match for when you get back into the park.   The run around the outside of the lake is flat and fun.   Your friends and family will be able to easily spot you and your desire to impress them is going to be high.

We hope this gives a good visual of the course and know you are going to enjoy the beauty of Camillus and the serenity of Gillie Lake at Veterans Memorial Park.  Take the time to ride and run the course a time or two so you have your race strategy mentally rehersed.  Congrats on a great day...in advance!!!

Remember this is a family function.   We encourage you to bring your family - children.  We will entertain them so the dad's can watch you in awe of your awesomeness!   The lake opens for the kids at noon!
