October Maintenance Guidelines

After years of working in the industry and building a nursery business around Oklahoma's inclement weather, we are suggesting the following maintenance guidelines:

* If you haven't yet, Pre-emerge with Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper containing dimension or  ferti-lome's For All Seasons II.

* Plant pansies, kale, and cabbage. Don't forget to use Blood Meal

* Seed fescue or rye grass as needed in shady areas through mid-October.

*Purchase bulbs and store in a cool or refrigerated place for November and December planting.

Featured Tree
True to its name, it seems only befitting to feature this gorgeous maple in October! Its glorious colors display brilliant orange to red and is the topic of many Oklahoma residents in the fall. Oklahoma proven and Chump's Choice for October.
Featured Shrub
This deciduous shrub has its best show in October showcasing beautiful deep lilac-violet berries from arching slender branches. It has no serious insect or disease problems and attracts birds. Great for accent or mass plantings.

Chump's Chatter

With the fall weather upon us, we tend to see more critters and insects hitchhiking their way into our homes. Whether they are poisonous or not, all home owners have their welcoming limitations especially when it comes to SPIDERS!

In Oklahoma, it's important to recognize the brown recluse, commonly referred to as the fiddleback spider, as well as the black widow.

Female brown recluse spiders may live from one to two years but some have reached ___ to ___ years.

The black widow is commonly found under eaves, gutters, around trash cans, wood piles, underground water meter casings, crates and stones. Each egg sac contains ___ to ___ eggs.

Dahlia's Answer: Brown Recluse: 4 to 5 years; Black Widow: 25 - 900 eggs

Dahlia's Dirt!

Learn to Recognize the Brown Recluse and Black Widow Spiders that thrive in Oklahoma

Growing up in Oklahoma, by a mom who taught science, I was accustomed to opening the freezer in our kitchen to all kinds of interesting bugs, including spiders! My mom made sure that we knew the so-called "GOOD spiders" and "BAD spiders", and especially how to identify the brown recluse/fiddleback and the black widow.

Check out
"Spiders: Brown Recluse, Black Widow, and Other Common Spiders" - The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Fact Sheet EPP-7301 by Richard Grantham and Russell Wright, entomologists. They provide us excellent and helpful information as well as photos on these Arachnids.

Annie's Halloween Haystacks

It was a treat for me to concoct a new recipe with my neighbor, Annie! She's quite the cook and has a creative eye for decorating.

Annie loves playing soccer and playing with her dogs. We share a love for books, and she's introduced me to all the Percy Jackson series.

These Halloween Haystacks will be loved by all your goblins.
