Zorba!
In Concert, June 20 - 29

at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre

Starring William Parry as Zorba

Free-spirited Zorba the Greek imparts his irrepressible philosophy of life to Nikos, a guarded young American, as they navigate love, romance, and heartbreak in Zorba!, the joyous 1968 musical written by Joseph Stein (book), John Kander (music) and Fred Ebb (lyrics). Broadway veteran William Parry takes on the title role in Palm Beach Dramaworks' concert production, which opens on Friday, June 20 (8pm) at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre, 201 Clematis Street. The show, which runs through June 29, is directed by Clive Cholerton, with musical direction by Caryl Ginsburg Fantel.

William Parry has had a long (40-plus years) and distinguished career in theatre.  He has originated roles in four shows with scores by Stephen Sondheim: Sunday in the Park with George (the Boatman and Charles Redmond), Passion, Assassins, and Road Show. Other career highlights include Sir Dinadan in Camelot opposite both Richard Burton and Richard Harris, and Captain Smith in the first national tour of Titanic. Joining Parry in Zorba! are  Laura Turnbull, Nick Duckart, Laura Hodos, Katherine Amadeo, Josh Lerner, Elizabeth Sackett, John Luaces, Jim Ballard, Ken Clement, Roland Rusinek, Cassandra Zepeda, Alyssa Fantel, and Lindsay Bell.

Zorba! is based on the novel Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis, in which the passionate, earthy Zorba tries to teach his young friend Nikos to embrace his live-for-the-moment approach to life. The two men travel to Crete, where Zorba gets involved with Madame Hortense, a French courtesan, and urges Nikos to  take up with a Widow. Along the way they experience misfortune and tragedy, but Zorba continues to dance through life.

The original production of Zorba! was directed by Harold Prince, and starred Herschel Bernardi in the title role, Maria Karnilova as Hortense, and John Cunningham as Nikos. The show was revived and somewhat revised in 1983, with Anthony Quinn and Lila Kedrova recreating the roles they famously played in the 1964 non-musical film. Robert Westenberg played Nikos in the revival, Alan Bates played the character on screen. The spirited score includes "Life Is," "The Butterfly," and "Only Love."

All musical concerts are performed with limited instrumental accompaniment and minimal staging and design. These full-length presentations include both the score and the book.

Palm Beach Dramaworks is a non-profit, professional theatre and is a member of the Theatre Communications Group, the South Florida Theatre League, Southeastern Theatre Conference, Florida Professional Theatres Association, Florida Theatre Conference, and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
