February 2018
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
2018 has gotten off to a busy start and the IDA council has a number of initiatives on the go. Traditionally, for me, January and February are months that are long and seem to take forever. I don’t know what’s different this year, but as I’m switching my calendar to March, I have to admit I’m surprised at how fast the weeks have flown by!

Looking forward to the next few weeks, as we have our AGM coming up in April and the council has a few positions available for those interested in joining us. Contact the office if it’s something you would like to know more about.

The spring session of the NCIDQ exam is also scheduled for April and our office has some resources available if you’re looking for some study aids or perhaps a study buddy and we’ll do what we can to help support you.
As we all continue to plough through the remaining weeks of winter (pun intended), we can also look forward to the upcoming Hard Hat party in Edmonton which I know the committee is working hard to create an event to remember, including opportunities for Calgary designers to join in the fun!

Take a read through the newsletter and see what else is on the go!

EVENT RECAP
CSC-CALGARY:
IGNITE STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION
IDA is proud to sponsor the 3rd place award for the CSC-Calgary Ignite Student Design Competition. Ignite brings together MRU Interior Design and SAIT Architectural Technologies students to collaborate in teams on a real client design project over a weekend. This year the client was the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore and Cochrane Humane Society. They requested a mobile vet clinic and adoption centre. Each of the teams came up with very creative designs to meet the programming requirements.

The $500 3rd place award, as well as the People’s Choice award, went to the team, MAIT. Congratulations to Benjamin Hackman, Nina Rinklef, Kelsie Dellaire, and Jill Fulton.

NCIDQ EXAM UPDATE
NEW PROGRAM LAUNCHING:
 ALTERNATIVE PATHWAY
IDA is proud to announce that we have adopted the CIDQ Alternative Review Process (ARP) program. This program will give the opportunity for our members who do not have a CIDA accredited education a way for their education and experience to be evaluated against current professional standards. If they meet these standards and competencies then they will be able to apply for our Registered category.

Candidates for the ARP must document competencies in the areas of:
  • Health, Safety, and Welfare
  • Human Behaviour
  • Design Process
  • Space and Form
  • Construction Documentation; Furniture, Fixtures, & Equipment; and Construction Administration
  • Environmental Systems and Controls
  • Interior Construction and Buidling Systems
  • Professionalism and Business Practice

These competencies may be demonstrated through education obtained and/or project work completed as part of one’s professional dossier. To be eligible for the program, candidates must be an IDA member in good standing, have a minimum of 8800 interior design professional practice hours, and can apply for it as part of their NCIDQ application if they are not already certified.

For those Associate and Provisional members who desire to further their professional standing and want to prove their competency, this is a excellent program to consider. As part of our decision to adopt this program or not, we had two of our members pilot the program. IDA will be happy to put any interested members in touch with one of them for more information and guidance about the process. Please contact the office at 780-413-0013 or info@idalberta.ca

View the application details here Make sure you click on the red labelled forms.
STUDYING FOR THE EXAM?
CIDQ has launched a new practice Practicum exam section, Small Commercial Quiz. It mirrors what that one section will be like in the actual Practicum with 40 questions, taking about 90 minutes to complete. The quiz is a single use, one time only exam, giving you an immediate score upon completion.

They have also added an additional quiz for both the IDFX and IDPX.
Have questions about anything NCIDQ related? Get in touch! 780-413-0013 or info@idalberta.ca and we will put you in touch with our CIDQ representative.
