Producer, Bishop T.D. Jakes invites you to the marriage of Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) and Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso, Fast & Furious), who just might be the perfect couple. Unfortunately, their families are a perfect recipe for disaster. Mrs. Watson (Angela Bassett) has an upper-crust sensibility that matches her family's posh estate, where Jason's straight-out-of-Brooklyn mom (Loretta Devine) seems utterly out of place. When the families gather for Jason and Sabrina's wedding, it becomes clear that each side has its traditions...and its secrets. When uptown meets downtown, the truth comes out - and only one question remains. Will this couple endure the hysterical and harrowing trials of love and finally jump the broom

This film was supposed to have a UK release but like Great Debaters, Pride and many other positive black fims.. it never happened. Images of Black Women and Black History Walks are proud to present this movie

The Great Debaters is a period drama directed by and starring two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington. Based on a true story, the plot revolves around the efforts of debate coach Melvin B. Tolson (Washington) at historically black Wiley College to place his team on equal footing with whites in the American South during the 1930s, when Jim Crow laws were common and lynch mobs were a pervasive fear for blacks.

The movie also explores Texas during the Great Depression the day-to-day insults African Americans endured and the importance of education,. Also depicted is James L. Farmer, Jr. (Whitaker), who, at 14 years old, was on Wiley's debate team after completing high school (and who later went on to co-found C.O.R.E., the Congress of Racial Equality). Another character depicted on the team, Samantha Booke, is based on the real individual Henrietta Bell Wells, the only female member of the 1930 debate team from Wiley College who participated in the first collegiate interracial debate in the United States. Wells also happened to be a African American poet whose papers are housed at the Library of Congress.
This is a fantastic, educational and inspiring film which never had a cinematic release in this country is presented by www.imagesofblackwomen.com and www.blackhistorywalks.co.uk

THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975 mobilizes a treasure trove of lost film forgotten in a Swedish basement for 30 years, into an irresistible mosaic of images, music, and narration chronicling the evolution of the Black Power movement. With unseen interviews with the leaders such as: Angela Davis, Bobby Seale, Stokely Carmichael, Kathleen Cleaver, Eldridge Cleaver,Minister Farrakhan, Huey P Newton, the film explores the community, people and radical ideas of the movement. Music by Questlove and Om'Mas Keith, and commentary from  Erykah Badu, Harry Belafonte, Talib Kweli, and Melvin Van Peebles. This film is an unprecedented account of an American revolution and must be seen by young and old. 10 Things You can Do to Support Black Films

Make sure you are the mailing list/Facebook page of groups that screen such films. Why ?  They have no funding for posters, TV adverts, merchandise deals, sides of buses etc so word of mouth is crucial. Each one, reach one.
Forward, text and tell all your contacts that 'X' film is showing at 'Y' venue. Why ? Dont assume people know, the events above are rare and provide solutions to some of the problems often complained abou. Bring a crowd and make it a community experience.
Write or video in to praise venues/groups that put on such films. Why? Institutions want proof there is demand for such films and those who put such films on appreciate being appreciated as it long, hard and miserable work to get such films on
Do not buy pirate DVD's of the latest film. Purchase legal copies direct from the filmmaker. Why? . The people who produce the film don't benefit and are far less likely to make a sequel or any other film. Plus, if 100,000 copies of their film sell on pirate but only 5000 sell legally there is no record that 100,000 people actually watched it which proves to the financiers/venues/Hollywood that there's no audience/money in black films.
Be prepared to travel further and to unusual venues. Why ? Some venues point blank refuse to show certain types of films or will charge ridiculous amounts and disrespect the organisers so they are forced to use unusual  places
Book in advance and dont wait until last minute. Why ? Cinemas make decisons on what film to hold over or to drop on the monday morning, after the weekend opening. Whatever has had the most views gets kept, the other films get dropped. If you decide to wait and 'get round to it',  its gone. Many excellent films have been shown once. So prioritise such films and go out of your way to see them.
Dont always expect Hollywood quality. Why ? Many filmmakers dont have Hollywood resources.
Inform yourself as to the level and extent of racism there is in the production and distribution of films and how bad the situation really is. Why? If Oprah Winfrey and Denzel Washington can't get their films seen in British cinemas until 4 years after they're released then something is seriously wrong and many other quality black films are being blocked. This means there is a severe lack  of wholesome entertainment, education and positive imagery. This lack can be addressed however by proactive groups and a Do For Self mentality.
