This October marks our 75th Anniversary for the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department! 75 Years of making life better for people because of parks and recreation is pretty darn cool! And, this year is especially significant because we're launching a new non-profit organization - the Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation - to further our mission of providing critical services to the Community.
Parks has come a long way since a young man named Alfred "Red" Morton started a recreational softball league in 1937. Today, we provide hundreds of classes, camps, programs, and services for tens of thousands of residents each year; provide after school educational and sports programming for over 8,000 elementary school children; provide specialized services to thousands of residents who need extra support; bring over 100,000 visits to Downtown each extended summer through our Events programming; and host hundreds of thousands of people in our 30 parks, plazas, and playgrounds each year. It's AMAZING what we can accomplish TOGETHER!
To help get the celebration off "PARKS AND REC STYLE", we have planned a GALA and "Fun"Raiser at the Fox Theatre, on Thursday, October 18th. We're gearing up for a fantastic program with a VIP Reception that includes a hosted bar (beer/wine), a "Taste of Redwood City" (local restaurants providing food), a raffle of great local prizes and admission to a great concert by "LOVE FOOL," all for $50. Or, for just the concert, it's $25 pre-show date. Proceeds for the event will go to support the new Parks and Arts Foundation - which in turn, supports our Department and our Community.
