Join Us for the 7th Annual
Ambassador Burger Bash

It's a Chamber event like no other.

The Annual Ambassador Burger Bash proves that business events don't have to be dull and stuffy. It's casual. It's fun. And it's outside. Plus, there's something to entertain you every second of the evening: great food, drinks, music, games, and the list goes on.

This year's event is very special in another way, too. The proceeds will fund the newly formed "Anita Jackson Memorial Community Service Scholarship."

Anita Jackson was a founding member of the Chamber Ambassador Club and a long-time supporter of the chamber, as well as many other local charities and organizations. She was instrumental in the creation and growth of the annual Ambassador Burger Bash, and her spirit and energy helped propel it to great success and popularity.

Recently, the Ambassador Club decided to use a portion of the proceeds from the event to fund two scholarships for students who will be graduating from a Jefferson County high school and continuing their education at either Eastern Gateway Community College or Franciscan University of Steubenville. Applicants were asked to provide information about their volunteerism and participation in local community activities, along with an essay about why community service is important to them. A committee of Ambassador Club members reviewed the applications and decided on the two recipients in May.

“I think Anita would be excited and grateful to have her name as a part of this new scholarship," Tricia Maple-Damewood, Chamber president, said. "She valued education and community service so much and made them each a very high priority in her life. We miss Anita’s energy and enthusiasm here at the Chamber every day, and this year’s Burger Bash will not be the same without her."

The 7th Annual Burger Bash, hosted by the Chamber Ambassador Club, will be held this Tuesday, June 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the green space at the  Best Western PLUS The Inn at Franciscan Square . Create a decadent burger masterpiece at the gourmet burger bar. Challenge fellow Chamber members in the popular cornhole tournament. Or wow the crowd by entering the Karaoke contest.  There's both a team and individual competition category with a trophy up for grabs in each. DJ Ralph Parissi will keep the music playing all evening long.  There's also a "D ouble Giveaway" for those who bring a prospective Chamber member to the bash. They will be entered into a drawing for $50 cash, and their guest will be entered in a drawing for a one-year free Chamber membership. That's a value worth over $225!

Admission is $20 per person. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call Ambassador Secretary Nicole Adamski at 740.282.0901 or e-mail her at [email protected].

Ohio Chamber Testifies In Support Of Computer Science Education Bill

On May 23, the Ohio Chamber testified in the House Education and Career Readiness Committee in support of legislation aimed at providing a new course option for Ohio’s primary and secondary school students. House Bill 170 directs the Ohio Department of Education to create “computer science” academic content standards for grades kindergarten through twelve.

Though the bill requires computer science standards be written for grades K-12, the focus of this legislation is on grades 9-12. The reason being, the bill permits high school students to take a computer science course in lieu of certain math or science classes and electives. Most notably a computer science course could be taken in place of Algebra II which is a challenging course for many high school students and is not even tested on as a high school graduation requirement.

The basis for the Ohio Chamber’s support is simple, we feel that in general, competency in computer science better prepares students for the workforce or their next step in education. Read the article in its entirety by clicking here.

Small Business Index Should Remind Washington to Continue Pro-growth Progress

Small businesses are naturally optimistic—you have to be to own a small business--but Washington has to deliver. That’s one takeaway from the new  U.S. Chamber and MetLife Small Business Index .

One thousand companies with 500 or fewer workers were surveyed, asking them to rate the health of national and local economies, whether they’ll be investing or hiring more, and future sales expectations.

Crunching all the numbers, the Index came up with a score of 60.6—a generally positive outlook. Roughly speaking, it means 60.6% of businesses view the economy through a positive lens.

On the plus side, the U.S. Chamber’s J.D. Harrison writes, small business owners are confident about the health of their companies.

However, there are some warning signs policy makers should make note of. For instance, their views of both the national and local economies are mixed. Read the article in its entirety by clicking here.
