Average auto insurance premiums in Michigan were $2,738 in 2016. That's almost exactly twice the national average.
In Detroit, premiums average more than $3,000 a year.  Read!
Michigan is the highest in the Nation, 20% higher than #2.
Let's do something about it!
The issue is very basic. Michigan has unlimited insurance coverage and often pays much more than typical costs. It is a gold mine for greedy  health care providers and TV attorneys. We must limit the claims in costs. Do we not carry health insurance and workers comp for the same thing? Talk to your legislators. MCU will set up a Citizen Task Force to push the legislature for significant reform to lower premiums.  If you are interested in joining email [email protected]

Welfare pays more than working!  The US Senate Budget Committee reported that in fiscal year 2012, between food stamps, housing support, child care, Medicaid and other benefits, the average U.S. Household below the poverty line re ceived $168.00 a day in government support.
What's the problem with that much support? Well, the median household income in America is just over $50,000, which averages out to $137.13 a day.
To put it another way, being on welfare now pays the equivalent of $30.00 an hour for 40 hour week, while the average job pays $24.00 an hour .
These 10 States now have more people on welfare than they do employed!

Michigan's median household income  in 2013 rose to $48,273, increasing 1.7 percent from 2012, according to the American Community Survey. Experts said it is a modest jump, the first significant one since pre-recession 2007. Source
According to the  Census ACS  1-year survey,  the median household income for Michigan was $51,084 in 2015 , the latest figures available. Compared to the  median US household income , Michigan median household income is $4,691 lower.
In 2015 Historical Real Median Household Income for Michigan was several hundred dollars a year LESS that 2005, 10 years prior.
But, of course, state and local spending kept going up!

Michigan Income flat!  Source
We hear constantly from public officials and government employees, and the MEA in particular, that they need to at least meet inflation. We can see from the above chart that private sector income has flat-lined for more than a decade.
As of 2010, Michigan state workers received approximately 47% more in total compensation than their private-sector counterparts.

DOJ Fights Whisk Management in Baker's Case
It may be one of the most important religious liberty cases in a century -- and President Trump isn't about to be on the wrong side of it. In the latest sign that this isn't Barack Obama's DOJ, the administration is going to bat for Jack Phillips, the Christian baker at the center of a five-year firestorm over vendors' forced participation in same-sex marriage. In a brief to the Supreme Court, the last stop for his case, the Justice Department argues that Jack was well within his rights to turn down a wedding cake order for a ceremony that contradicts his faith.
"The government may not compel an unwilling speaker to join a group or event at odds with his religious or moral beliefs," Attorney General Jeff Session's team argued. "Otherwise, a graphic designer whose clients include 'a Jewish affinity group' could also be forced to make fliers 'for a neo-Nazi group.'" The Left is desperately trying to turn this into a debate about Christians refusing service to same-sex couples. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Like Barronelle Stuzman and dozens of other wedding vendors, Jack offered to sell the men anything in his store.
Public accommodations laws are important, acknowledged a Justice Department official, but "they -- like other laws -- must yield to the individual freedoms that the First Amendment guarantees."   More

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country, but he that stands it NOW, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods, and it would be strange indeed, if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. ++ The percentage of each past president's cabinet who had worked in the private business sector prior to their appointment to the cabinet. You know what the private business sector is:  A real-life business not a government job.

Here are the percentages:
38% T. Roosevelt
40% Taft
52% Wilson
49% Harding

42% Hoover
50% F. D. Roosevelt
50% Truman
57% Eisenhower

42% Ford
32% Carter
56% Reagan
51% GH Bush
39% Clinton
55% GW Bush
  8% Obama
90% Trump
This helps explain the bias, if not the incompetence, of the last administration: ONLY 8% of them have ever worked in private business! That's right! Only eight percent - the least, by far of the last 19 presidents! And these people tried to tell our corporations how to run their businesses?
How could Obama, as president of a major nation and society, the one with the (former) most successful economic system in world history, stand and talk about business when he's never worked for one? Or about jobs when he has never  really had one (OR CREATED ONE)? And, when it's the same for 92% of his senior staff and closest advisers? "Bottom line is the majority of people along the coast have never experienced a major hurricane like this. It will be truly devastating"

Hurricane Irma barreled toward vulnerable Haiti on Thursday after devastating a string of Caribbean islands and killing at least 10 people as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century took aim at Florida. With winds of around 185 miles per hour (290 km per hour), the storm has smashed through several small islands in the northeast Caribbean in recent days, including Barbuda, Saint Martin and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, ripping down trees and flattening homes and hospitals. Winds dipped slightly on Thursday to 175 mph as the storm lashed the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Irma is expected to hit Florida as a very powerful Category 4 storm on Sunday, with storm surges and flooding beginning within the next 48 hours.  Article

For the first time in modern history, three hurricanes in the Atlantic are lined up to make landfall at the same time, according to the National Hurricane Center. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued advisories on Hurricane Irma (currently located north of the Dominican Republic), Hurricane Jose (700 miles east of the Lesser Antilles), and Hurricane Katia (over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico)  Article

++     DACA Decision sets the perfect tone!   After Speaker Ryan and others demanded the President do nothing while Congress addresses the issue of illegal kids, the President called his bluff by setting a time limit for Consgree to act. It is a brilliant move to get Republicans in Congress off their hands and behinds, after failing to repeal ObamaCare or cut taxes or fund the wall or confirm many appointments.
"Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program would be rescinded, after a phase-out of six months. President Donald Trump has called for Congress to address the issue of what happens to individuals who came to the United States as kids with their undocumented parents..."
Obama, still trying to control the government from his DC mansion: Trump Immigration Move 'Cruel,' Not 'Required Legally   Article
"I do not favor punishing children, most of whom are now adults, for the actions of their parents. But we must also recognize that we are nation of opportunity because we are a nation of laws,"   Trump said in a statement.
Trump said former President Barack Obama bypassed Congress to set up the DACA program in 2012. "There can be no path to principled immigration reform if the executive branch is able to rewrite or nullify federal laws at will." Article
++ President Donald Trump surprised the leaders of his own party in Congress on Wednesday when he backed a deal pushed by Democrats to attach hurricane relief money to a shorter-term bump in the debt ceiling as well as keeping the government open, cutting off his own Treasury secretary to strike a deal.
The decision was one of the most fascinating and mysterious moves he's made with Congress during eight months in office.  The remarkable turn of events left Republican congressional leaders, in control of both chambers of the legislative branch, "shell-shocked" and "visibly annoyed," and showcased how a President who also authored "The Art of the Deal" actually cuts one.
Trump's stunning agreement to endorse a plan proposed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi came during a Wednesday morning meeting with leaders from both parties in the Oval Office, the first such meeting of Trump's presidency.
Several Republicans briefed on the meeting said that Trump, who has been absent a major legislative achievement for his first seven months in office, was hungry for a deal. It also came after he was warned of a packed legislative calendar that could have pushed off tax reform past this fall. Article

Comment:  We sense the President is fed up with a feckless obstructive Republican legislative leadership that stands in the way of his plans and promises to the electorate. This is his second message this week, to McConnell and Ryan.  We encourage the President to stand firm, and Congressional Republicans to get on board with Making America Great Again. Michigan Reps, we are watching!

++ North Korea Nuclear Test Puts Pressure on China and Undercuts XiIt was supposed to be Xi Jinping's moment to bask in global prestige, as the Chinese president hosted the leaders of some of the world's most dynamic economies at a summit meeting just weeks before a Communist Party leadership conference.
But just hours before Mr. Xi was set to address the carefully choreographed meeting on Sunday, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, detonated his sixth nuclear bomb.
Mr. Kim has timed his nuclear tests and missile launches with exquisite precision, apparently trying to create maximum embarrassment for China. And on Sunday, a gathering in southeast China of leaders from Russia, Brazil, India and South Africa, members of the so-called BRICS group, was immediately overshadowed by news of the test, which shook dwellings in China and revived fears of nuclear contamination in the country's northeast region.
This is not the first time Mr. Kim has chosen a provocative moment to flaunt his country's weapons. In May, he launched a ballistic missile hours before Mr. Xi spoke at a gathering of world leaders in Beijing assembled to discuss China's signature trillion dollar One Belt, One Road project.
The confluence of North Korea's nuclear testing and Mr. Xi's important public appearances is not a coincidence, analysts said. It is intended to show that Mr. Kim, the leader of a small, rogue neighboring state, can diminish Mr. Xi's power and prestige as president of China, they said. In fact, some analysts contended that the latest test may have been primarily aimed at pressuring Mr. Xi, not President Trump. Article

++ Russia and China are objecting to even tougher sanctions on North Korea.
"They'll eat grass, but they won't abandon their program unless they feel secure," Russian President Putin told reporters Tuesday at an emerging markets summit in Xiamen, China, which was hosted by his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said Monday the Trump administration would seek the strongest possible sanctions against Kim Jong Un's regime. Kim was "begging for war" after testing what he claimed was a hydrogen bomb, she said after a meeting of the UN Security Council. Haley said the U.S. would circulate new draft sanctions and wants the Security Council to vote on them Sept. 11.
Japan is singing the same tune as the U.S., with Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso on Tuesday calling for additional measures. "There's no chance of talks progressing without increasing pressure," he told reporters in Tokyo.
Putin condemned what he described as a policy of whipping up war hysteria, which he said could lead to a "global catastrophe and a huge number" of human casualties. "There's no other path except for a peaceful, diplomatic resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem," he said.
Even before North Korea detonated its most powerful nuclear bomb on Sunday, Japan was calling for moves to cut off its oil supply. Afterward, Trump threatened to halt all trade with any country that does business with Kim Jong Un's regime. China, which supplies most of its food and fuel, called the warning "unacceptable."
Since the Korean War, Beijing has avoided prodding North Korea to the point it might collapse, fearing a destabilizing economic blow and the possibility of the U.S. military gaining influence on its border via a unified Korea. That calculation has held even while China's interests have diverged from those of North Korea.
Even so, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa said Tuesday that her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi told her that Beijing is open to additional sanctions. Kang told parliament that her nation is working with the U.S. for the "strongest" measures against North Korea.
Trump agreed on Monday to support billions of dollars in new weapons sales to South Korea. Hours later, the Seoul-based Asia Business Daily reported that North Korea was preparing to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile before Saturday. More

Remembering: 33,651 USA battle deaths and 3,262 other deaths in the

In all, about 54,000 Americans died in military service during that three year period.
War is an ugly thing, and should be a last resort to solving conflicts.

516  Canadians  also  died and 26,000  served in the Korean War  Facts

++  Since the beginning of the 20th century, Korea had been a part of the Japanese empire, and after  World War II  it fell to the Americans and the Soviets to decide what should be done with their enemy's Imperial possessions. In August 1945, two young aides at the State Department divided the Korean peninsula in half along the 38th parallel. The Russians occupied the area north of the line and the United States occupied the area to its south.
"If we let Korea down," President  Harry Truman  (1884-1972) said, "the Soviet[s] will keep right on going and swallow up one [place] after another." The fight on the Korean peninsula was a symbol of the global struggle between east and west, good and evil. As the North Korean army pushed into Seoul, the South Korean capital, the United States readied its troops for a war against communism itself.  Source

++ The Korean War  began on June 25, 1950, when 75,000 North  Korean  soldiers poured over the 38th parallel into South  Korea  to impose communism on its neighbor. The  Korean War  began at 4:30 a.m. on June 25, 1950, and ended on July 27, 1953.
This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea's behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself.  In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war. The Korean peninsula is still divided today. Article

++  The United States lacks a comprehensive strategy on North Korea, but instead has engaged in "a sanction here, another sanction here," rather than delivering a "shock therapy" to the increasingly aggressive country, former Defense Secretary William Cohen said Tuesday.  Link

Comment: A brother pulled duty in the towers lining the 38th Parallel, looking for infiltrators from the North. In fact, he was instrumental in getting released a prisoner he knew, that his own government stated several times was not in the North POW camp. John kept seeing him and insisted it was true, the man havuing been his shop teacher back in South Lyon. Michigan Sentor Bob Griffin helped pop that prisoner at our request. It was a hell hole then, and still is. Policy makers need to duplicate what brought down the Berlin Wall and unified a split Germany.

++ Over-ride Snyder Vetos!  Governor Snyder vetoed bi-partisan bills SB 94 and SB 95 that would have slightly moved up the schedule to phase in a partial credit of the value of trade-in vehicles against the taxable value of a new vehicle.
Under the current law if you buy that shiny new vehicle at a discount off the "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price" (MSRP) you pay sales tax on the MSRP. Looking at vehicles this week (GM made in Mexico or China, e.g., with 20-40% "North American" parts), a $46,000 vehicle might be discounted to $38,000 but you pay tax on $46,000. 6% of the $8,000 differential is $480.00 too much tax!
When the vehicle is 10 years old and worth $6,000, you still pay license fees on the basis of the new MSRP.   It is a dispicable shameless scam! And it discriminates against poorer and some minority folks who prefer the older luxury or classic vehicle over a newer, smaller one.
And it doesn't just apply to vehicles. That Menards 11% discount, Kohl's $10 certificate or Jo-Ann's 50% off coupon, you still pay yaxes at the artificially high pre-discount price. Check out your cash register receipts, then get steamed about the rip-off!
SB 94 and 95 does advantage new auto dealers over used vehicle dealers or individuals selling their own vehicles, as the small discount only applies to new vehicle sales.
Beginning in 2013 the dollar amount of the discount available for a trade-in was $2,000 (@6% = $120.00 less sales tax). It increases available discount by $500 ($30.00 tax) per year until it reaches $14,000 (i.e., $ 840 in 2039).
The bills would have kept the $500/year allowance increase until 2018 and then taken it up to $1,000 allowance increase ($60.00 less taxes on a new vehicle trade-in/year) until the $14,000 differential was reached ($2019). The actual impact might reduce combined sales and use tax by merely $2.7 Million in FY 2018-19, $5.6 M in 2019-20 and $8.1M in 2020-2021.  Fiscal Analysis
After Billions of dollars in increased taxes and fees, Billions of dollars in spending increases and a huge surplus last year, Gov. Snyder could not bear the thought of reducing taxes to spur car sales and jobs even a tiny amount - even though the SMALL rollback would not apply until his last months in office.
This after Snyder fought even a very small roll-back in income tax of merely $ 2.00 on $1,000 income - again breaking promises made to taxpayers years ago. He could not stand the thought of the average family paying $100 a year less income taxes, to spend on things important to them, creating more private sector jobs paying more government taxes.
In our opinion  Snyder wants a socialist Michigan economy. He wants to grow government and assure future growth. It is time the legislature sends him a message. Even such a mild one as to over-ride his vetoes of SB94 and SB95.

++ RAISE RATES AGAIN? MICHIGAN PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION SEEKING COMMENTS
The Michigan Public Service Commission will hold a public meeting at Schoolcraft College in Livonia from 1-5pm on September 6th. The meeting is designed to take public comment on the development of an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) structure that utilities would need to follow in their filings with the state. The IRP process is designed to identify and evaluate the different possible ways that the state can meet its energy needs.
This includes a newer program called "demand response" for which it will be particularly important to receive public comment on because it can involve things such as different rates at different times of the day, as well as voluntary programs that allow for utility control of certain high use devices such as air conditioners to help prevent brownouts.
In his Newsletter Sen. Patrick Colbeck expresses  concerns that such demand response programs can be used to increase electricity rates beyond what the free market would otherwise demand.
Comments can also be submitted by mail or electronically. The deadline is Oct. 6 for comments and Oct. 20 for replies to comments. Mail comments to Executive Secretary, Michigan Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 30221, Lansing, MI 48909 or email them to [email protected]. Be sure to reference Case No. U-18418 in all correspondence.

++ Michigan's Public Service Commission and the monopoly utilities it regulates appear committed to imposing an in-state generation mandate on Michigan's electricity choice providers.
But the Commission's own lawyers say the plan would harm the reliability of the electric system, push electricity costs up and even contradict federal policy.
Only after the language requiring in-state generation was removed in the final hours of the final evening of debate did enough Republicans agree to vote "yes." By waiting until the requirement was removed from the bills, Michigan's elected representatives sent a clear statement that using the legislative process to kill off electricity choice was a nonstarter.
Despite that clear legislative intent, the MPSC stated in a June 15, 2017, order that it planned to resurrect the same in-state generation requirement that legislators had openly rejected just six months earlier. Not surprisingly, the MPSC's plans are injecting back into the discussion all the concerns first raised by advocates of choice.
When Michigan citizens elect their representatives, they expect them to have a say in the policies that affect their lives. When those representatives make a clear statement of intent on a key policy issue, it seems imminently reasonable to expect Michigan's government employees to pay attention. When those government employees seek further legal advice on how to respond, and that advice agrees with the clearly stated intention of the Legislature, it seems odd that they would ignore it. If the Commission is going to ignore the Legislature and its own lawyers, and push forward with its plan for an in-state mandate, one has to ask why they bothered with the regulatory review process in the first place.
This is coming to a head. We will see if the House Energy Committee will step up to the plate. It's Chair is willing! MORE

The Seventeenth Amendment came about when progressivism and populism were the new popular political ideologies of the time. Woodrow Wilson passed the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913, but Wilson's administration was also the closest thing to fascism America has ever seen. It is theref ore also fitting that Wilson is also regarded as the father to progressivism. MORE
