2010 Domaine Chante Cigale Chateauneuf-du-Pape
(65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault)

"The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is a traditional blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre and Cinsault from 50-year-old vines aged in a combination of concrete tanks, old wood foudres and small old barrels. It displays notes of charcuterie, roasted meats, garrigue, kirsch and black currants along with a full-bodied, seriously endowed, super-concentrated mouthfeel that builds like a skyscraper in the mouth. This cuvee possesses remarkable density and richness as well as the potential to last 20 years."

On the Mistral, Grenache, and Chateau Chante Cigale

It's one of the Southern Rhone's most readily apparent features, resting not within the soil but blowing well above it and beyond the northern horizon and bending to its will any tree or shrub that dares defy its sometimes-80-mph winds. Yet the proprietors of the Rhone Valley readily welcome the Mistral - for the great northern wind that howls southward throughout the growing season not only whisks away the fungal diseases which often plague Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne; but often also takes with it any overcast clouds, leaving the vineyards of the Southern Rhone more fully exposed to the light of the sun. It leaves in its wake cauldron conditions, made all the more intense should your vineyard plots enjoy the galets roules (or small pebbles) that readily absorb the heat and release it at night. In this windswept furnace few forms of life can endure; but the vine can thrive should you find a hardy varietal that can shrug off both heat and wind - like vigorous and broad-shouldered Grenache, whose wooden limbs are more hardy than most other varietals and whose root system readily plunges into the depths in search for water. Here, Grenache vines can yield wines with fistfuls of red cherries and strawberries infused with lavender (even violets!) and with a dash of baking spices and even cocoa. Broad-boned and almost burly in body - no surprise given how ripe its fruit becomes in the Mediterranean warmth of Southern France, Grenache wines nevertheless can display a grace and a poise that rivals the great wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Should you enjoy some choice sites and take care in the cellar, as the young and dynamic Alexander Favier of Chateau Chante Cigale so does. Some of his plots rest in the lieux-dits Pignan and Rayas, from which one of the world's very greatest wine estates harvests its fruit. The sandy and/or limestone rich soils naturally restrict the vigor of the Grenache vines, compelling them instead to focus upon the formation of intensely flavored and remarkably ripe yet fresh clusters of fruit. Mindful of his fortune, Favier aims for a gentle extraction of flavors so as to highlight the virtues of his harvest. He does destem some of his fruit, but fruit from select parcels (where ripeness is never a problem) remain with stems for added complexity. Favier practices a pre-fermentation cold soak--a technique that encourages the extraction of flavors while minimizing the extraction of tannins. He also induces an alcoholic fermentation with wild yeasts; though unpredictable and less efficient (demanding more active management of the cap, as Favier does with punch downs and pump-overs) than commercial yeast, alcoholic fermentations with wild yeasts are cooler and more lengthy - which in turn safeguard against the loss of fresh and floral-flavored precursors that would otherwise boil off in higher temperatures. And though he ages some of his wine in oak barrels (and only a fraction of it is new), a large proportion of his Chateauneuf is aged in concrete - large neutral receptacles that leave no trace of flavor onto his wines.

The results? A stunning wine and one of the gems of the 2010 vintage!    Shop Now
