From the Desk of Alderman Beale...
Despite the statewide fiscal crises, the 9th Ward is bringing jobs and economic development to the neighborhood while moving forward on initiatives to build a stronger community.

Chipotle Mexican Grill and Potbelly Sandwich Shop are slated to open restaurants on 111th Street just west of Doty Road, in the coming year, which will create approximately 40 construction jobs and 50 new permanent jobs. Whole Foods announced that they will build their new Midwest Distribution Center in Chicago's Pullman neighborhood and expected to employ 150 individuals. Method Home Products and Gotham Greens continue to prosper and hire employees from the 9th Ward.

Chipotle and Potbelly Opening in Pullman/Roseland Community
As the first fast casual restaurants to open in the community in more than 20 years, the new Chipotle Mexican Grill and Potbelly Sandwich Shop locations are scheduled to be constructed along 111th street just west of Doty Road, affording more dining options to the 9th Ward community.

Alderman Anthony Beale, in close collaboration with Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, Inc. (CNI), received Chicago City Council approval to embark on the next phase of retail development on the former Ryerson Steel plant site and gateway into the new Pullman National Monument.

Whole Foods Distribution Center Coming to Pullman
Continuing its resurgence and becoming one of Chicago's largest industrial employment centers, the historic Pullman community is slated to become the new home for the Midwest Region Distribution Center for Whole Foods.

Standing on the grounds of the former Ryerson Steel Plant in Pullman Park, a mixed-use planned development behind Method Home Products, Gotham Greens and the Walmart Super Store, Alderman Anthony Beale, accompanied by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, representatives of Whole Foods, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI), U.S. Bank and community leaders, made the announcement of the agreement for the new 150,000 square foot distribution center.

Brooks High School Opening a
Seventh and Eighth-Grade
Academic Center
Because of its fine track-record, beginning in September 2016, Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy will open a selective-enrollment academic center for talented seventh and eighth graders from across the city.

The Academic Center houses a learning environment with an accelerated curriculum that includes high-school level and college-credit coursework. In addition, students enrolled in the district's academic centers are guaranteed admission to a selective enrollment high school.

Affordable Live/Work Space for Artists Coming to the Neighborhood
Just one year after President Barack Obama declared Chicago's Pullman neighborhood a national monument, Chicago's Landmark Commission gave its stamp of approval for the first building to be rehabbed and constructed within the historic district. The proposed Pullman Artspace, an affordable live/work space for artists, received approval to incorporate the shell of the existing buildings at 111th and Langley into housing for 36 artists as well as common space for classes, exhibitions and workshops.

A Letter from Alderman Beale - Fair First Steps to Protect Passengers and Drivers
Whenever a Chicagoan or tourist gets into a limousine, cab, bus or even a horse-drawn carriage, he or she has always done so with confidence - knowing the driver and the vehicle were duly licensed by the City of Chicago. Now, thanks to an ordinance recently passed by Chicago City Council, you can add ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft to that list. The new ordinance requires ride-sharing drivers to be licensed - a big step in extending vital consumer safeguards to this new class of service.
