Nan's Gourmet Foods
Summer 2015
Issue No. 10

Q: What did the pig say at the beach on a hot summer's day?

A: "I'm bakin'."

Yes, dear Nan Fan, we do have a calendar.  And we do know that summer officially begins June 21.  But doesn't it seem like summer begins Memorial Day weekend?  We like to think so!

Summer is signified by a lot of things, but how in culinary terms?  Here is what summer & food evokes for us:  Corn on the cob.  Watermelon.  Hot dogs at the ballpark.  Ice cream cones & sundaes.  Cold summer drinks & crisp white wines.  Outdoor dining.  And, perhaps most inescapable, the grill.

For us this summer is hereby the Summer of the Grill.  We will probably grill every single night!  This issue of Nan's Newsletter is therefore dedicated to 'all things grill'.  We'll reintroduce you to our grilling sauces, give you a smoke blended grilled salsa recipe you will be hot to try, and then make you an offer you can't refuse - a searing sale on our grilling sauces!

So, why not let us get in your grill for a couple of minutes?

Do You Know About Our
New Grilling Sauces?

We've had them at shows for a few months now, so they may not be new to you - but two new grilling sauces have joined our lineup.  The good news is that they have been flying off our shelves - not only do they taste great, but the consensus is you are happy they are healthier too!  We take pride in these words on the label of each jar:

All Natural

Vegan

Gluten-Free

No High Fructose Corn Syrup

Here are our tasting notes:

Original Marinade & Grill Sauce - For the traditionalist this is our classic offering: a clean, fresh tomato-based grilling sauce. Smooth, tangy and sweet with just a hint of smoke and light on the spiciness.  Think of it as a straightforward, St. Louis style.

Caribbean Rum Marinade & Grill Sauce - The subtle aroma of rum instantly whisks you away to the islands, and the taste on the tongue adds rich sweet/sour tropical flavors along with a lingering, pleasant but not overpowering spiciness.

We now have *NINE* very unique and amazing grilling sauces!  Six are tomato-based traditional barbeque sauces, one is more of a teriyaki Asian style, and we have two grape-seed oil based wine marinades.  It is fun for us to watch you taste them all at shows - there really is something - or more than one something - for everyone!

To commemorate the Summer of the Grill, Nan is offering sale pricing on all of our grilling sauces from now until July 5th!
This means all nine of our tasty and unique sauces & marinades, from Cabernet & Roasted Garlic to Zesty.  They are normally priced at $11.00 each - but from Memorial Day to Father's Day, and then onto the 4th of July, the sauces are just $8.00!

So check them out and get 'em while they're discounted!

Grilled Smoky Salsa

Grilled Smoky Salsa
Everyone knows Nan has the nicest serving dishes...

Recently our Queen Bee bought a new Traeger Grill for our test kitchen - we have been in a grilling frenzy ever since.  If you don't know about Traeger grills, they are a grill and smoker - entirely temperature controlled and they make grilling fun and easy.  They use pellets instead of gas or charcoal.

This recipe is adapted from their website.  If you don't have a Traeger simply add a dash of liquid smoke to the recipe.

ingredients
  • 2 large tomatoes, halved
  • 2 10 ounce cans original Rotel Diced Tomatoes & Green Chilies
  • 1 medium sweet onion(Vidalia or Maui)
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 1 or 2 jalapenos (to taste), seeded & halved
  • 1 tablespoon Pastamor? Barrel-Aged Balsamic Vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • large handful cilantro
  • juice of 2 limes
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional if not using smoker)
Start your grill.  Set the temperature to High (450?F) and preheat, lid closed (10-15 minutes).

While your grill is heating up, cut the onion into thick slices. Once preheated, place tomatoes, jalapenos and onion cut side down directly on the grate and grill for 5-10 minutes.

After grilling, put all ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse to combine for 30 seconds or so until all ingredients are finely chopped and salsa is the desired consistency. Adjust for seasoning. Serve with chips or over tacos. Enjoy!

Inspired to fire up and join us for the Summer of the Grill?  We hope so!  Also, if any of you are on the Traeger bandwagon like us and have some recipes to share - especially if they include our products - please be sure and let us know!  Have a sizzling great summer!

Take Care and Happy Cooking (err Grilling)!
