New York - As we continue the celebration of Garifuna Arts & Culture Appreciation Month, The Garifuna Coalition USA, Inc. a, nonpartisan, nonsectarian 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization in partnership with the Bronx Music Heritage Center is pleased to announce Bronx Rising! A Celebration of Garifuna Culture, Saturday, May 17th at 6:00 - 10:30 pm at the Bronx Music Heritage Center Lab: 1303 Louis Ni�� Blvd. 

 

 

The Celebration of Garifuna Culture is in honor of the 13th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Garifuna Language, Music and Dance as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and will feature:

 

Screening of Revolutionary Medicine: A Story of the First Garifuna Hospital at 6:00 PM

 

The first Popular Garifuna Hospital of Honduras is a community initiative in defense of the health of the communities. The hospital is located in the community of Ciriboya, Colon in the east of the country.

The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble featuring Lucy Blanco - Part III of the Maxine Sullivan Women in Jazz series. 7:00 PM

 

The Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble with Lead Vocalist Lucy Blanco, James Lovell on Garifuna Drums, Background vocals and Guitar, Dre Barnes on piano, Hilliard Greene on Bass, Gary Fritz on Percussion, and Evalou Vo on Violin, featuring the choreography of Mariano Martinez and Martini Morales. This new, distinct musical art form is an inimitable, alluring fusion of Garifuna, African, African American and European elements, using Garifuna and contemporary instruments. The music is not only delightful, but traces and sustains the language, love and legacy of the Garifuna people.

The Bronx Rising! series is curated by City Lore award-winning folklorist Elena Mart�nez and Grammy-nominated Bronx musician Bobby Sanabria.

 

Bronx Rising! programming includes Latin music & jazz, comedy, poetry and book readings, and film screenings with Q&As. Bronx Rising! is co-sponsored by City Lore.
