WELL I SURVIVED TEACHING THREE SUMMER SCHOOLS!!

Here are the results from two of them and the next newsletter will feature the wonderful time spent in Bavaria at the SCHWAEBISHE KUNSTSOMMER along with a few other snippets of news.
WORKING TOGETHER SUMMER SCHOOL with myself and Ruth Issett

Ruth and I had a fantastic time with very 'willing' students and although it was at times lots of hard work it was also great fun.......hopefully for the students too!!!
I began teaching this summer school by getting students down to drawing straight away. Students began by familiarising themselves with the dry media supplied and soon moved onto more challenging exercises. These images reflect a sensitive tactile drawing in response to 'touch', using their face, body and clothes as the subject. The aim of this exercise was to create a drawing in response to what they were feeling, and without looking at the drawing. They were required to establish a connection between the touching hand and the drawing hand. We were very excited at the results which were to serve as the starting point for the rest of the course.

Ruth introduced mono-printing as a further means of creating dramatic abstract designs onto a sheet of A1 cartridge paper, still working in monochrome, with a touch of colour.

Students were then introduced to developing ideas further onto tracing paper, drawing in less conventional ways with different tools.

It was not long before students were able to see connections in working with fabric and stitch.

'Into the Fold' ~ Sept 25th ~ 27th 2014 (Thurs/Fri/Sat)

170 for 3 days which includes your lunch and some materials

Three dimensional forms will be the focus for this three day course and will serve as the starting point for further development, into exploring surfaces and structures. This mixed media based course will show students innovative ways of making new marks and surfaces, for use in experimental structures. Students will leave with a full body of ideas to pursue and there will be plenty of discussion of how these ideas can engage with your own personal development into fabric, stitch or paper. This is an ideal course for students to not only explore and learn techniques onto paper, but how then to make constructive use of the papers and other materials in exciting ways.

We shall be returning to colour on this course and showing you methods of decorating paper surfaces and then transferring these glorious papers into simple 3 dimensional structures.

I think thats all for now.....but just before signing off news has just come in of an exhibition that will be well worth visiting. These students are taught by the renowned artist Cecily Sash.

Whats more I shall be in Presteigne myself some of the time from 21st to 27th (not Sunday), as I shall have a pop-up shop raising funds for Uganda, so come along and see me as well as visiting this exhibition.

Look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon, but I shall also be back soon with more images and news.
