Did You Know? Playing youth sports has a reputation for creating costs for parents. Golf, especially, has a reputation of being expensive. As a result, many parents shy away from the game when they think of the greens fees, clothes and clubs. At The First Tee, we make it easy. Kids and teens can “come as you are” — no special equipment necessary. We also will not turn a child away due to an inability to pay.
Golf can be played in many ways; individually, as a team, stroke play, or match play. Match Play is one of the oldest forms of golf, if not the oldest. The score is kept by holes, instead of by overall strokes.
Players will go up or down a certain number of holes within the match, or be "All Square" if the match is tied. In this type of game, the match can be over before all 18 holes are played, if the opponent does not have enough holes to catch up.
Par Fundamentals:
Club Selection
When choosing a club for chipping or pitching, players must factor in several circumstances. Perhaps the two most important are carry distance to the target, and the type of lie.
The longer the carry distance, the more loft is required. This is also true for bad lies. The deeper your ball sits in the grass, the more loft you'll need to get it out.
Many times, Professionals will choose a low-lofted club like a 3-wood or hybrid for locations just off the green. Generally, it's wise to try to get the ball on the green as soon as possible, no matter what your location is. Good club selection requires experience and a working knowledge of what you'll need to do to get it close.
A match consists of one side playing against another over a stipulated round unless otherwise decreed by the Committee.
In match play the game is played by holes.
Except as otherwise provided in the Rules, a hole is won by the side that holes its ball in the fewer strokes. In a handicap match, the lower net score wins the hole.
The state of the match is expressed by the terms: so many "holes up" or "all square," and so many "to play."
A side is "dormie" when it is as many holes up as there are holes remaining to be played.
