Beyond Boobs! is dedicated  to healing and saving lives by supporting young women diagnosed with breast cancer while providing breast health education for all.

Dear BB! Friends,

As we journey through life, I am amazed at the people we meet along the way and how our lives intersect in the most unexpected ways. Sometimes cancer opens a new door or relationship that blooms into something bigger than any one of us. Pat Garvey's story below is an example of that. Pat's first wife's breast cancer diagnosis inspired a soccer tournament many years ago that now benefits BB!, but it wasn't until his daughter's diagnosis last year that we realized the real reason we'd been brought together. Pat shared with us, "I've dealt with cancer as a husband twice and now as the father of a daughter. In each case, I've always viewed my role as one of loving and bringing comfort to one with the cancer. I yearn to find a way to ease her pain and to offer her love in some substantive way. She knows we are there for her and she knows we love her, but offering her Beyond Boobs! as a place to turn, brings comfort to us. We know now that you came into our lives not because of a soccer tournament."

We understand that support for young women through their journey is our mission, but in Pat's case, we realize that the healing for his daughter is also supporting and healing him too. We are so happy that Pat found us three years ago. While we need support from fundraisers such as his, in the end, he and his daughter need us too. I know you will enjoy reading more about Pat's story below from BLOG writer, Jamie McAllister and that it will truly warm your heart on this winter day.

Hugs, Mary Beth Gibson

A Labor of Love - 16 Years Later
By: Jamie McAllister

What began as one family's efforts to heal after loss has become a premier soccer tournament on the Virginia Peninsula, impacting hundreds of players, volunteers, and families every year. The Christine Garvey Memorial Soccer Tournament, now in its 16th edition, will be held March 17-19. The tournament will take place over three days at half a dozen Peninsula venues, including Wolftrap Park, where the inspiration for the event occurred.

Tournament director Pat Garvey, whose first wife Christine passed away from breast cancer in December of 1998, was with her when their son Kyle scored a goal during the last soccer game she attended at Wolftrap Park a few months before her passing. "Kyle scored a goal from the right side of the pitch to the upper left corner of the goal," Pat said. "I can still see Chris sitting there, watching that goal being scored. I think that's where my idea for a soccer tournament got its start."

The first edition was held in March of 2000 and 16 teams participated. The tournament, which includes boys' and girls' junior varsity and varsity teams, expanded to 32 teams its second year and has remained at that number ever since.

"We now have coaches who used to play in the tournament when they were in high school," Pat said. "We have young people playing in the event who weren't even born when it first began."

The first tournament in 2000 was a labor of love. Pat, seeking a way to overcome his grief and honor his first wife, organized the event with a dozen friends. The next year he teamed up with the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson. Just as the tournament has grown to include players from all over the region and beyond, the Kiwanis support grew too and now includes sponsorship from numerous clubs throughout the area.

Per Christine's wishes, funds raised from the tournament went to a national organization for breast cancer research and education. Three years ago Pat decided to work with two nonprofits a little closer to home - Beyond Boobs! and Edmarc Hospice for Children.

"For me, it is not happenstance that Beyond Boobs! and this tournament ended up being connected," said Pat. "When we got together three years ago I had no idea that my daughter Kate would one day be diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 38."

Pat works closely with Beyond Boobs! Executive Director and co-founder Mary Beth Gibson, and she was the first person he called when he learned of his daughter's diagnosis. His second wife, Jane, was also diagnosed with breast cancer and is a seven-year survivor. After confronting the disease twice, he knew the importance of advice and support. He wanted his daughter to experience all of the love and encouragement that Beyond Boobs! provides to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Several women from Beyond Boobs! will also be part of the action during the tournament. They will hand out trophies on the 19th to the girls' varsity team at Bailey Field and to the junior varsity team at Wolftrap Park that same day.

Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on the teams at the tournament. Attendees can purchase a tournament pass for $10 and watch any game at any venue. Day passes are also available for $5 and allow attendees to watch games at any venue for the entire day. Donations of any amount to Beyond Boobs! or Edmarc Hospice for Children can be given when purchasing passes.

Did You Know?

March 3rd is Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Day

About 10 to 20 percent of breast cancer diagnoses are classified as triple negative. Many of the young women of Beyond Boobs! are facing this particularly challenging form of the disease. What exactly is triple negative breast cancer? The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation explains it this way:

"It is now commonly understood that breast cancer is not one form of cancer, but many different "subtypes" of cancer. These subtypes of breast cancer are generally diagnosed based upon the presence, or lack of, three "receptors" known to fuel most breast cancers: estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). The most successful treatments for breast cancer target these receptors.

Unfortunately, none of these receptors are found in women with triple negative breast cancer. In other words, a triple negative breast cancer diagnosis means that the offending tumor is estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative and HER2-negative, thus giving rise to the name "triple negative breast cancer." On a positive note, this type of breast cancer is typically responsive to chemotherapy. Because of its triple negative status, however, triple negative tumors generally do not respond to receptor targeted treatments. Depending on the stage of its diagnosis, triple negative breast cancer can be particularly aggressive, and more likely to recur than other subtypes of breast cancer."

Amy
49, Diagnosed at 43
No Immediate Family History
No Known Genetic Mutation

Bank teller, wife, and mother to a teenage son, Amy awakened one morning with a severely swollen right breast. She first consulted her husband (a prostate cancer survivor), then a nurse friend, and finally an urgent-care doctor who arranged for her to have a mammogram and see a specialist just three days later. Her diagnosis, stage 3 Inflammatory Breast Cancer, caused Amy's family and close friends to rally into full support mode.  Despite this support, the fear and the reality of what she would face sent her into a downward spiral of emotions and thoughts of "Holy cow, how am I gonna do this? I am not this strong!"   Read more about Amy and hear her story too
