Purchasing The Historic Banner Elk School
in The Heart of Banner Elk

Matters Of The Heart in Dollars.
How to come up with $1 million and
a ongoing, money-making enterprise?

A Queen of Hearts, a Knight in Shiny Armor,
a Partner with deep pockets.
By Ron Johnson

There are a lot of great idea's floating around town about what to put in the building in the heart of Banner Elk that would bring enjoyment (or at least peace of mind) to our residents and visitors.

However, finding the money to implement those idea's is another matter of the heart or should we say matter of the pocketbook.

First there has to be a way to raise a million dollars or at least enough money to make the $83,000 yearly mortgage payment (due in 10 months) plus another estimated $18,000 annually to maintain even a empty building.

Having published this online magazine going on three years I have always been amazed by the love people have for Banner Elk. There is hardly a day that goes by that a complimentary email is not received from Banner Elk Magazine subscribers here and from folks in 27 states and 17 countries.

I kid you not when I say that there are dozens of subscribers who have never been to Banner Elk. They live in big cities and vicariously live the beautiful small-town life we cherish through the magazine.

Is it possible that someone reading this right now will be moved to come forward and gift our town with a million dollars to buy the school and property with no strings attached?

Is it possible that someone with an ongoing enterprise could come forward and partner with the town?

Yes, it is possible. Very possible.

I have had the privilege of knowing philanthropists who have given millions to good causes anonymously. I also have had the privilege of knowing benefactors who gave millions and wanted nothing more than their name on the building. Some of these folks own summer homes here or visit here regularly.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone showed up at the public hearing Monday with a $1 million check or a partner with a big idea?

Business Insider ranks North Carolina
as number 15 in economic recovery

Now that the recovery appears to finally be taking hold, Business Insider decided to see how that recovery was being felt across the country.

We ranked each state on how eight economic measures have grown or shrunk in recent years: the unemployment rate, the number of non-farm payroll jobs, gross domestic product, average wages, the working age (18-64) population, value of international exports, house prices, and auto sales.

"We are very excited that the Banner Elk campus of Grandfather Home has reopened the historic Neale Cottage to specifically care for children who have been abused and/or struggle with Intellectual Disability and Developmental Disability. After a very generous donation which helped to cover the renovation cost, we can now offer a safe, secure healing space for children who in the past have fallen through the cracks of mental and behavioral health care.
