Bruckner's Romantic symphony is without doubt the most spiritually charged symphony we have on our program this year. I'm happy we have saved it for last. That's when you bring out your best, isn't it?! I know the orchestra has been looking forward to this concert because they don't get the chance to play Bruckner often. He seems to be misunderstood here in the USA, and I don't know why. He described Brahms' music as being beautiful but said that he hoped
it would be his own music that would transport the listener to a different place. I feel this is true. His music is so emotionally charged that listening to it is like an exercise in meditation. That would seem to suit Bruckner, because when not composing himself, Bruckner, a deeply religious man, spent much of his time in prayer.
I know many of you won't know this piece, but don't let that stop you from getting to know one of the real masterpieces of the repertoire, and one of the most spiritually uplifting pieces ever written.
