It's not often that we don't have much to say when we welcome a new producer to our portfolio. But with Jura-based Les Granges Paquenesses, it looks like we're going to have to let the wines do the talking.

The fact is, the wines of Les Granges Paquenesses are so under the radar that only a fortunate sliver of the French wine world even knows they exist. So if you're scouring the French wine press for accolades or glowing reviews, mum's the word.

That's in part due to the fact that Jura itself--tucked between Burgundy and the Swiss border--has only recently received the credit it deserves as a wine region. Not counted among France's ten major wine-producing regions, Jura has begun to develop a reputation for being home to some of the best small-scale, biodynamic winemakers in the country, who grow unique varietals and employ sometimes quirky methods but nevertheless produce consistently excellent and distinctive wines.

The unassuming environs of Les Grange Paquenesses.

In addition, it doesn't help that Loreline Laborde--the winemaker at Les Granges Paquenesses--is so humble. Loreline specifically moved to Jura to take advantage of a wine region whose low rents and ideological adherence to traditional methods are partly a result of its place on the periphery of French wine. For her, Jura was the perfect place to pursue a simple farm life (complete with chickens, a horse and her vegetable gardens), apart from the hubbub of Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Rhone.

Working with a traditional Jura line-up of Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Chardonnay, Loreline employs a pure and rustic approach to winemaking, working everything with her hands and her horse at the utmost respect for nature.

But if Loreline has actively avoided the spotlight to this point, it may be about to catch up with her. And as soon as you taste what she has to offer, that message will be loud and clear--you'll be as ready as we are to sing the praises of the wines of both Jura and Les Granges Paquenesses.

Loreline Laborde, Les Granges Paquenesses' humble but passionate winemaker.

We feel extremely lucky to be able to welcome Les Granges Paquenesses into the Weygandt fold, and to carry the winery's three cuves: its Brut Cremant du Jura (the most rustic and earthy of the lot), its Chardonnay La Mamette (a wine that shows more mineral than most Jura Chardonnays) and its Savagnin La Pierre (a true treat of a wine; rich, round and full of minerals). These are each incredible wines in their own right--but at their low price points, they're a revelation.

This Friday and Saturday, we'll be pouring samples of our new Les Granges Paquenesses arrivals, so swing by the store to taste them for yourself (or contact us to place an order). The buzz about Les Granges Paquenesses may only be a whisper at this point, but when you see what they have to offer, we're sure it'll be the talk of the town. -- Sam Mitchell | Wine Consultant, Weygandt Wines

Brut Cremant du Jura NV

LIST PRICE: $22.99/btl
SALE PRICE:
$18.99/btl
$17.99/6-pack
$16.99/case

Made from 100% Chardonnay, this sparkling wine features a classic brioche-tinged bouquet with a distinct hint of underbrush and earth. The most "rustic" of Les Grange Paquenesses' offerings, its finish is long and full of minerals, indicative of Jura's terroir.

Chardonnay La Mamette 2011

LIST PRICE: $22.99/btl
SALE PRICE:
$18.99/btl
$17.99/6-pack
$16.99/case

A very pure Chardonnay with lots of lemon, citrus and crushed stone. In contrast with other, more earthy Jura Chardonnays, this wine possesses plenty of minerality, and shows its soil more than its earth.

Savagnin La Pierre 2010

LIST PRICE: $27.99/btl
SALE PRICE:
$23.99/btl
$21.99/6-pack
$19.99/case

A real treat, this non-oxidized wine is pure, rich yet precise, with plenty of minerality. The nose is intoxicating, with hints of salt and minerals, while the palate is quite linear with bright acidity. The crystalline finish is persistent and dominated by mineral and acid. Even at its list price, finding sub-$30 Savagnin of this quality is a rarity. At this sale price, it's closer to an impossibility!

Savagnin La Pierre 2011

LIST PRICE: $27.99/btl
SALE PRICE:
$23.99/btl
$21.99/6-pack
$19.99/case

A richer, rounder style, yet still maintaining a lovely sense of balance, this offers up a deep and complex bouquet of pear, lemon and orange zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and rock solid at the core, with excellent focus and grip, ripe acids, lovely balance and a very long, soil-driven finish. Again, this is a clean wine made in a non-oxidative style. And again, the quality to price ratio for this Savagnin is off the charts!
Wine 101:
JURA
Jura is an elevated, cool climate region in eastern France located between Burgundy and Switzerland. While it is not counted among France's ten major wine regions, in recent years, its reputation for producing unusual, distinctive, and increasingly popular wine has grown.

Jura wines are either produced ouill (topped off) or sous-voile (under a veil of yeast). The differentiation occurs during barrel aging, when the winemaker decides whether to add extra wine to the barrel to compensate for evaporation, or to allow a thin film of protective yeast to form on top of the exposed wine. The former style is typical throughout France. The latter is practiced only in the Jura, primarily with white wines made from Savagnin and Chardonnay. The result is wines that are distinctively oxidative (think apples, caramel and nuts), yet surprisingly fresh.

Like in Burgundy, the majority of the Jura's plantings are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Another staple is the unique Savagnin grape, normally used to make Vin Jaune-the region's tangy and saline "yellow wine." Other varietals include Poulsard, Trousseau and Melon Queue Rouge.

Appellations within the Jura region include Arbois, Chteau Chalon, Crmant du Jura, Ctes du Jura, L'toile, and Macvin du Jura.
