Introducing the Greater Orlando Area Scholarship Fund

I'm pleased to announce a new scholarship being offered at Ave Law - The Greater Orlando Area Scholarship Fund - which has been established to encourage potential students from the Orlando area to attend the law school. We're grateful to the Ave Maria Society for Education, Inc. in spearheading the development of this scholarship.

We kicked off the scholarship announcement at a very nice gathering of friends and alumni at the home of my mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Gellein, in Winter Park, Florida. We were honored to have Tom Monaghan address our guests along with two distinguished alums, Adam and Lisa Haba. Lisa Haba is a 2009 graduate of Ave Law. She works for the States Attorney's Office in Seminole County. Adam Haba is a 2008 graduate of Ave Law. He is the Founding Partner of The Haba Law Firm, a general practice firm, with a special focus on residential and commercial foreclosure, criminal defense, family law and immigration services, across the State of Florida.

Spotlight On: Staff Member Cindy Mariconda

Cindy Mariconda, Accounting Manager at Ave Maria School of Law, recently took a certification course elevating her to APS status. This accomplishment confirms Cindy has a high level of knowledge and experience as a specialist in the field of accounts payable. Cindy has been with Ave Law for five years and began as a Faculty Assistant. Soon thereafter she moved into the role of Accounting Coordinator, and most recently has been promoted to the title of Accounting Manager.

Cindy has a diploma in Medical Billing and Coding where she earned a 3.8 GPA and was on the Dean's List. Not an easy feat, she achieved these accomplishments at the age of 51. Cindy hopes to expand on her APS certification and eventually receive her PHR (Professional Human Resources) or SPHR (Senior Professional Human Resources) certifications.

"I can go many directions in my career with all of the experience I developed and the vast amount of interest I hold. Don't look for me to stop - I intend to rise and continue to expand as much as allowed or possible, even at my ever increasing age." - Cindy Mariconda

Cindy's youngest son graduated from high school Summa Cum Laude with a 4.9 GPA, top twenty in his class, as a scholar with a diploma from Cambridge University. In October, he will be enlisting in the Marines to serve our country.

Let's take the time to congratulate Cindy. We're grateful to have her as part of the Ave Law staff and family.
In Memoriam

Monsignor Laurence Higgins and Tom Monaghan

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Monsignor Laurence Higgins on Wednesday, August 24th.  Monsignor was an esteemed benefactor and dear friend of the law school and was prominent in Tampa's religious, government and business communities. He served as pastor of St. Lawrence Catholic Church for over 49 years.

We ask that you please keep Monsignor and his family in your prayers during this time of loss. I would like to share with you my thoughts and the thoughts of Dean Emeritus Gene Milhizer on the passing of Monsignor Higgins. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

"Monsignor Higgins was an exemplary servant of Christ.  Despite his fame and celebrity, his heart and ministry remained with struggling families and the poor.  He was a champion of Catholic education and fervent supporter of Ave Maria School of Law.  He has left an indelible impact and will be greatly missed." - Eugene Milhizer, Dean Emeritus, Ave Maria School of Law

"Monsignor Higgins believed passionately in our mission of training lawyers with an understanding that the law, morality and the common good are inextricably linked. To that end, he established the Monsignor Laurence E. Higgins Endowed Scholarship at Ave Maria School of Law to benefit students from the Tampa community.  Several of those students now live and work in the Tampa area fighting for justice and human rights.  Monsignor believed in the sanctity of life and the importance of the family.  His dedication and life work with the poor, disenfranchised and less fortunate among us is legendary and will be his legacy.  He was a man of God who possessed extraordinary character and a determination to serve his fellow man.  We were extremely blessed to have Monsignor Higgins as a part of our history and recently named a new lecture series, the Laurence E. Higgins Lecture Series, at Ave Maria School of Law in his honor. May he rest in the peace of Christ."   - Kevin Cieply, President and Dean, Ave Maria School of Law
