THE GLORY OF A TRUE CHURCH
THE MARROW OF TRUE JUSTIFICATION
THE TRAVELS OF TRUE GODLINESS

Travels of True Godliness               Marrow of True Justification

Benjamin Keach (1640-1704) was one of the best and most well-known Baptist and Puritan theologians of the 1600s. He was instrumental in introducing hymns into the church's worship, and also was one of the framers of the 1689 London Baptist Confession. He also had a profound love for the church, which is displayed in all that he wrote. We are delighted to offer this trilogy!

THE TRAVELS OF TRUE GODLINESS: from the beginning of the world to this present day : in an apt and pleasant allegory
"After defining godliness and showing its worthy pedigree and antiquity, 'the excellent Benjamin Keach' (as he was fondly called), allegorically personifies 'Godliness,' much as Bunyan did 'Christian.' He introduces us to more than two dozen enemies of godliness, then details Godliness's encounters with several of them, including apostasy, hypocrisy, legalism, antinomianism, worldliness, and Satan. We meet in graphic detail the temptations of youth and old age, of riches and poverty, as well as the joys of contentment, thoughtfulness, kindness, and love. This is a fascinating read by the most important Baptist thinker of his day, designed to stir us up to a greater pursuit of godliness." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

THE MARROW OF TRUE JUSTIFICATION
"The publication of Benjamin Keach's 'The Marrow of True Justification' is a timely and welcome addition to the growing body of literature from 17th Century Particular Baptist authors. This is especially true for two reasons. On the one hand, it provides us with a helpful insight into their wonderful grasp of the gospel and its nature. They were clear in their understanding of law and grace, forgiveness, the nature of the work of Christ and everything else related to a clear proclamation of the gospel. But on the other hand, it helps us to see that modern errors and deviations from the purity of the gospel are not new. They are simply old heresies dressed in modern terms. Keach's work calls us back to the well-established path of Scripture and Reformed Theology. I pray that this work will be read far and wide and strengthen our resolve to preach Christ and his gospel in purity and simplicity. Thank you, SGCB for this reprint." - Dr. James Renihan

THE GLORY OF A TRUE CHURCH
"Without question, Benjamin Keach was the greatest theologian among Baptists of the second-generation. He was also a faithful pastor who cared deeply for the church, and longed to see it ordered according to God's revealed will. In this little book, 'The Glory of a True Church', Keach brilliantly, clearly, and succinctly explains the nature of church polity as well as regular and orderly church discipline. I highly recommend it to scholars, pastors, and laymen alike!" - Tom Hicks, PhD Pastor of Morningview Baptist Church

GOING BEYOND THE FIVE POINTS

Pursuing a More Comprehensive Reformation

Rob Ventura, General Editor

In recent years, a doctrinal shift has taken place among believers so great that even the secular press has taken notice. Christians across denominational lines are laying hold of the biblical truth of God's electing love and saving grace in Christ, commonly called 'Calvinism.' For many, this marks the beginning of a deeper study into the whole counsel of God in Scripture. A thirst to be thoroughly biblical in all areas of life is driving a more comprehensive present-day reformation beyond the famous 'five points.' This book captures the voices of seasoned Reformed pastors graciously guiding and encouraging Christ's beloved sheep to press on and to seek the 'old paths, where the good way is' (Jer. 6:16). In this anthology you will be instructed concerning the abiding relevance of the Ten Commandments, God-centered worship, the masterful unfolding of God's great plan of redemption through divine covenants, the identity, nature, and work of the church, and the help that confessions of faith lend to our grasp of God's glorious Word.

ENDORSEMENTS

"The rediscovery of 'the doctrines of grace' among Baptists during the last sixty years has thrilled my heart! However, this welcome advance does not make a reformation. The further necessary questions of 'what is the church?' 'how should we worship God?' 'what is Christ like living?' stand before us still, begging for biblical reformation. 'Going Beyond the Five Points' provides clear biblical direction for reforming churches today. Barcellos' defense of the Ten Commandments for Christian living under grace is unassailable. Blackburn's chapters on Covenant Theology and the doctrine of the church are indispensable to Baptist reformation. Waldron's explanation of the Regulative Principle is greatly needed by Baptists to remind us of our foundational principle which needs renewed application to worship and government. Martin's persuasive defense of why Baptists need confessions of faith today is irrefutable. To gather them together as Ventura has done provides a classic standard for further Baptist reformation today. Baptist pastors, students, and church members need to study this book to understand what it means to build biblical and Reformed Baptist churches today for the glory of Christ." - Dr. Fred A. Malone, Senior Pastor First Baptist Church Clinton, Louisiana

"Going Beyond the Five Points is a wonderful pastoral resource to give to any brother or sister in Christ who has begun the journey of better understanding the doctrines of grace. If the Five Points are the appetizer for the hungry believer, these essays will provide a rich and satisfying main course to guide them in a deeper understanding of the truth." - Jim Savastio, Pastor of Reformed Baptist Church of Louisville, Kentucky

The Forever People will help us savor eternity--not so much the grandeur of our future as its implications for our everyday lives. Because living in the light of eternity, says Nederhood, affects everything. Foreverness is a subject that "taunts our earthbound wits, bogged down as they are in conventional wisdom that is like earth dust, not like the galaxies." These 100 lively meditations move us beyond conventional wisdom and offer wide-ranging insights drawn from a lifetime of pastoral experience. You'll be moved to wonder and praise as Nederhood shows how our eternity defines us. 207 pages, softcover from CRC Publications.

THE FEAR OF GOD by John Murray

"John Murray's booklet on the fear of God--a theme that desperately needs to be resurrected today--is the best short treatment of this subject anywhere in the English language." - Joel R. Beeke

WOMEN SPEAKING IN THE CHURCH by B.B. Warfield, R.L. Dabney & Geoff Thomas

"This project is a must! Feminism and egalitarianism are insidious errors, striking at the heart of both home and church and probably society as well. Both God's creation ordinance and the character of the the church are affected. Warfield and Dabney deal with these matters biblically and powerfully. I cannot urge you strongly enough to get these two great works into print. You must do this!" - Pastor Don Lindblad

BIBLICAL CHURCH DISCIPLINE by Daniel Wray

"Wray's work is a wonderful primer on its subject. The second definition of primer is 'A book that covers the basic elements of a subject.' The root of primer is from the Latin for first. This book has been the first to be consulted by many who have faced real life issues related to church discipline. It remains a well-balanced and properly basic reminder of what is most important." - Dr. Michael Renihan

FOR WHOM DID CHRIST DIE? by John Murray

"The question of the extent of the atonement is simply: for whom did Christ make atonement? In even simpler language it is: for whom did Christ die? The question is: on whose behalf did Christ offer himself a sacrifice? On whose behalf did he propitiate the wrath of God? Whom did he reconcile to God in the body of his flesh through death? Whom did he redeem from the curse of the law, from the guilt and power of sin, from the enthralling power and bondage of Satan? In whose stead and on whose behalf was he obedient unto death, even the death of the cross? These are precisely the questions that have to be asked and frankly faced if the matter of the extent of the atonement is to be placed in proper focus." - John Murray

DECISIONAL REGENERATION vs DIVINE REGENERATION by James Adams

"Being or becoming religious is not the same as being regenerate. That applies whatever the religion; even one that describes itself as 'evangelical.' As surely as everyone has to be born to live on earth, so everyone must be reborn to have heavenly eternal life; and no one can do either for himself. All life comes from God, and by way of gift. James Adams explains all this so clearly in these pages and also how the good news should be both preached and received." - Hywel Jones, Professor of Practical Theology, Westminster Seminary California

THE TRUE DOCTRINE OF THE SABBATH by Nicholas Bownd
No book had more influence in confirming a Sabbatarian 'heart' to Puritanism than that of the parson of St. Andrews, Norton, Suffolk, Nicholas Bownd. 'The True Doctrine of the Sabbath' was the first scholarly treatment defending the concept of the Christian Sabbath or Lord's Day, later embodied in the Westminster Standards. Not reprinted since 1606, this influential work is presented afresh in a new critical edition.

"It is astonishing that the Puritan Nicholas Bownd's famous work on the Sabbath, which greatly influenced later Puritanism and the Westminster Assembly, and by extension, Western Christendom for centuries, has not been printed in a critical edition with modern typeface long ago. Not reprinted since 1606, this classic work emphasizes the fourth commandment's morally binding character, the divine institution of the entire Sabbath as the Lord's Day set apart to worship God, and the cessation of non-religious activities that distract from worship and acts of mercy. I am so grateful that it is back in print, and pray that it will do much good to restore the value and enhance the joy of the Lord's Day for many believers around the world." - Joel R. Beeke

THE QUEST FOR THE HISTORICAL ADAM by William VanDoodewaard
Was Adam really a historical person, and can we trust the biblical story of human origins? Or is the story of Eden simply a metaphor, leaving scientists the job to correctly reconstruct the truth of how humanity began? Although the church currently faces these pressing questions (exacerbated as they are by scientific and philosophical developments of our age) we must not think that they are completely new. In 'The Quest for the Historical Adam', William VanDoodewaard recovers and assesses the teaching of those who have gone before us, providing a historical survey of Genesis commentary on human origins from the patristic era to the present. Reacquainting the reader with a long line of theologians, exegetes, and thinkers, VanDoodewaard traces the roots, development, and, at times, disappearance of hermeneutical approaches and exegetical insights relevant to discussions on human origins. This survey not only informs us of how we came to this point in the conversation but also equips us to recognize the significance of the various alternatives on human origins.

"Dr. Bill VanDoodewaard has gifted the church with a work that began as a labor of love but has grown into a significant major study in which he marries the disciplines of a church historian and the concerns of a Christian theologian. The issues on which he touches reach down to the very foundations of the Christian worldview, to creation itself. Those who share the author's understanding of the early chapters of Genesis will deeply appreciate his detailed analysis and synthesis of how they have been interpreted throughout the Christian centuries. And those who differ, whether in fine details or in major ways, ought, in integrity, to familiarize themselves with the copious material that Dr. VanDoodewaard here presents. This is a valuable and significant contribution to a much-debated subject and from a perspective that has too often been overlooked." - Sinclair B. Ferguson

MINDING YOUR FAITH
How Men Can Have Devotional Lives That Will Actually Affect Their Real Lives
Gregg Hodge

"As one who regularly reads and teaches books related to the history of biblical spirituality, I believe that I have some idea of wheat and chaff in this ever-growing field of thought and reflection. This new book by Gregg Hodge is definitely in the category of wheat, for here is solid, practical wisdom on how best to nourish the soul. So buy this book--ponder it--and don't be afraid to do what it says!" - Dr. Michael A.G. Haykin

"Every time I find myself languishing in self-pity, smoldering in anger or sinking in doubt; every time another failure strips my last hope or fatigue squelches my best intentions; whenever distractions jar my focus; whenever circumstances challenge my beliefs, or when my pain eclipses my joy, I begin, not by tending to my emotions, but by minding my faith. So my hope is to help you do the same for your own satisfaction and for God's Glory." from the Introduction

The Testimonies of Thirty Converted Roman Catholics

Richard Bennett Today at 77

Richard Bennett is a former Catholic Priest, now an Evangelist. He originally comes from Ireland, where the Jesuit priests trained him in his early years. He then received eight years of theological instruction and preparation for the priesthood with the Dominicans. He completed his education at the Angelicum University in Rome in 1964. He spent twenty-one years as a Catholic parish priest in Trinidad, West Indies. After fourteen years of contrasting Catholicism to biblical truth, he was convicted by the Gospel message in 1985. He was then saved by God's grace alone. Soon after, he formally left the Catholic Church and its priesthood. He has founded an evangelistic ministry to Catholics called "Berean Beacon."

As he reaches the age of 77, he is about to publish with us at Solid Ground Christian Books the book, "On the Wings of Grace Alone: The Testimonies of Thirty Converted Catholics."  Having read these testimonies from ordinary people they are VERY powerful indeed. I have been greatly encouraged by the way the Lord has led so many to perfect freedom in Christ in a variety of ways.  One of the consistent similarities about these testimonies is THE CENTRAL PLACE OF THE BIBLE in all their stories.  Sadly, to most Roman Catholics the Bible is a respected book, but tragically all too often a neglected book.  Here you will see the truth found in the words of Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

A Wounded Army Vet Joins with Bo, the Three-Legged Dog,
to Teach Children Invaluable Lessons
by Sharman Martin

Solid Ground and "Dancing with the Stars"?  I am not a fan of the show but recently a young man, NOAH GALLOWAY, has taken that show by storm as he has performed with one arm and one leg, which he lost while serving his country in Iraq, nearly 10 years ago.  Noah is the HERO in our latest children's book.  It is an amazing book for children of all ages.

Follow the adventures of Bo, a real-life, three-legged dog who lost his right leg in a terrible accident, but who persevered and won the heart of his new owner and the author of the book. Although this is written for young children, parents and teachers will find this story tugging at their hearts, as they see the value and integrity of all creatures of our God and King.

Despite incredible obstacles, Noah has persevered to become a national hero to tens of thousands who have heard him speak about overcoming disabilities. One purpose of the book is to share how one can overcome trials that are sent as a test from the Lord. The language is simple and the pictures are breath-taking, and touch the heart.

PLEASE PRAY FOR NOAH as he is now facing challenges even more dangerous than the ones he faced in Iraq.  Fame can be intoxicating.

SERMONS ON THE LORD'S SUPPER by Jonathan Edwards

There are 15 sermons in this 272 page book, only two of which have been published before, and those in the expensive editions published by Yale University Press. They are not available anywhere else.  Nine of the sermons deal with the Lord's Supper; the other 6 are on a variety of topics.  LIST PRICE $30.00  -  SALE PRICE $10.00

THE CHRISTIAN ON THE MOUNT: A Treatise on Meditation by Thomas Watson

This scarce work by the beloved Puritan Thomas Watson has been out of print since the early 19th century. It calls us to love God with our minds by thinking on things of eternal significance. "The Puritans were thoroughly Reformed, consistent, and persistent in using 'the art of meditation' as an important spiritual discipline and half-way house between the reading of Scripture and prayer. More than forty Puritans wrote books on the subject. Today we have reaped the fruits of not understanding that a non-meditative, mindless Christianity soon produces a spineless Christianity. Thomas Watson's guide for meditation is one of the best and briefest on the subject. If you wish to transform your spiritual disciplines for the better, read, re-read, and then put into practice this precious little book." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke

LIST PRICE $15.00 - SALE PRICE $8.50

THE PRECIOUS THINGS OF GOD by Octavius Winslow

The author elucidates such 'precious' things as Christ, faith, trials, God's thoughts, divine promises, the blood of Christ, the anointing of the Holy Spirit, God's children, God's Word, prayer, Christ's sympathy with our infirmities, and the death of the saints.  This is a wonderful devotional manual on experiential Christianity. This book is the first modern edition of this title. It has been retypeset and slightly modernized. The last edition published prior to this was a lithograph of a 19th century copy. This is a completely new edition.  Highly recommended by MacArthur, Beeke and many others!!

LIST PRICE $24.00  -  SALE PRICE $10.00

SIGHS FROM HELL The Groans of a Damned Soul  by John Bunyan

This book is especially timely in light of Rob Bell's recent book release called "Love Wins," in which he denies a literal hell, other than the one we make for ourselves. But over 300 years ago John Bunyan wrote this little work in which he exposits the story in Luke 16 of Dives and Lazarus, and shows biblically that hell is quite literal---at least Jesus thought so! This book has been slightly updated as to language and grammar. It is hardbound and printed on acid-free paper. While this work of Bunyan's is not as well known as "Pilgrim's Progress," it is very important, particularly for evangelism. This is what sinners need to be saved from!   LIST PRICE $20.00  -  SALE PRICE $10.00

THE INFINITE MERIT OF CHRIST: The Glory of Christ's Obedience in the Theology of Jonathan Edwards

"While setting the record straight on Edwards's theology through leaning heavily on his own writings (800 quotes from Edwards!), Biehl's work is also a tour de force for the confirmation of Reformed orthodoxy in the midst of ongoing debates about justification today." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

"Craig Biehl's work offers just what is needed today - a comprehensive treatment of Edwards' understanding of Christ and His saving work of redemption. Few of the leading Edwards scholars know Reformed theology well, or understand the significance of Edwards' soteriology." - Dr. Doug Sweeney

"Biehl's careful hand skillfully guides us through these writings, even leading us to offer words of praise for what Christ has done for us - a rare and admirable feat for a piece of scholarship." - Dr. Stephen J. Nichols

THE BOX: Answering the Faith of Unbelief

"This is a great book to share with a non-Christian inquirer. Written as a dialogue between a Christian and an atheist, it is enjoyable to read, and its presuppositional argument for the truth of Christianity is cogent. I hope it gets a broad circulation." --John M. Frame, J. D. Trimble Professor of Theology and Philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary

"This is a wonderful help. Its reasoning is tight, but it is 'popular' enough to be helpful for virtually anyone. Really a nice work." --Fred Zaspel, Author of The Theology of B. B. Warfield

"Biehl's book is impressive. The dialogue is a helpful and interesting approach that makes apologetics more accessible. There is so much to which I could point that I consider to be good and even striking that I think it would be pedantic to list them all." --David McWilliams, Senior Minister, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Lakeland, FL

READING "RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS" - A Study Guide to Jonathan Edwards' Classic on the Nature of True Christianity

Have you ever put abook down and thought, 'Wow, that's deep. I wish I had a friend who could walk me through this book and explain it point by point'? Craig Biehl has done precisely that. Furthermore, he has done it for one of the most important books ever written: 'Religious Affections'. No one since the apostles had more insight into authentic godliness than Jonathan Edwards. But his books can be difficult to read. Biehl's study guide helps you to understand the historical situation of Edwards's day. It walks you through Edwards's teachings in easy-to-follow outlines mingled with choice quotes from Edwards. After each section he presents several questions for personal meditation or small group discussion. I regularly assign 'Religious Affections' to my students and heartily recommend Biehl's book as a companion to all who would read, understand, and apply Edwards's masterpiece." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"With exacting rigor and care, Jonathan Edwards' Treatise Concerning Religious Affections provides both a diagnosis of the Great Awakening and good medicine for what ails Christian piety. In this unique study guide, Craig Biehl here dispenses twenty manageable and carefully referenced doses drawn from the Treatise for the health of true religion in the church of the Great Physician. " - R. Daniel Knox, Pastor, Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, PA

The original was published in the 1670s and has a foreword by John Owen. Samuel Petto (c 1624-1711) was a dissenting minister in Sudbury, Suffolk. The list of 29 Scottish ministers recommending the book include M'Crie of Edinburgh and Kidd of Aberdeen. THIS IS THE FIRST EDITION PRINTED SINCE 1820!
John Owen said the following about this volume: "This work by this worthy author is a sober endeavor for the declaration and true stating of the nature and difference of the two covenants of works and grace."

CHRIST & HIS CHURCH IN THE PSALMS  by Andrew Bonar
"Of the highest order of merit. The author does not strain the text, but gives its real meaning. His remarks are always weighty, spiritual, and suggestive; we only wish there were more of them. He has cultivated brevity." - CH Spurgeon

THE GOSPEL REVEALED TO JOB by Charles Hulbert

Comprises thirty lectures with notes. Spurgeon gives his top rating and says: "An unusually good book; exceedingly comprehensive and helpful in many ways. The author aimed at usefulness and has succeeded wonderfully. We wonder that his work has not been better known."

THOUGHTS FOR YOUNG MEN
by J.C. Ryle
Preface by Sinclair Ferguson

Of the more than 350 books I have published in the last twenty-four years none have received the number of glowing endorsements like Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle.  WHAT A BOOK!!

"RYLE IS MAGNIFICENT! There's no other word for it, - are you brave enough to face hard-hitting truth and have God search your heart on things that matter most? Then Ryle is the man for you! Do yourself a favor - read this and think about what you read." - J.I. Packer

"I heartily endore it, and strongly commend it to both Christian leaders and fathers, not to mention older and younger men alike." - John MacArthur, Jr.

"Thoughts for Young Men is pure spiritual gold." - Jerry Bridges

"Thoughts for Young Men abounds in reliable counsel and says - with a rare combination of seriousness and graciousness - the very things we need to hear. Young men, for whom it was written, will find it invaluable; but all Christians, men or women, young or old, can read it with lasting benefit. It deserves to be widely read and circulated, and will do spiritual good to every reader." - Sinclair Ferguson

"Thoughts for Young Men is wise, frank, warm-hearted and hard-hitting. I hope that many, many young men will study it, and that parents and teachers will also read it in order to clarify their vision of what Christian young men should be. Although written over a century ago, the message is right up-to-date." - John R.W. Stott

"Out of Ryle's dealings with many young people came one of the most important and relevant things he ever wrote, his Thoughts for Young Men. The reading of this material could well be a turning point in the lives of many today across the world." - Iain Murray

"I am happy to commend the re-publication of Thoughts for Young Men." - Leon Morris

"Thoughts is sound, profitable reading. I commend it to young men everywhere." - James M. Boice

"I am very thankful for your bringing into print once again Ryle's excellent book Thoughts for Young Men. May it have a wide audience of those with ears to hear." - Elisabeth Elliot

HOLDING COMMUNION TOGETHER
The Reformed Baptists:
The First Fifty Years - Divided & United
by Tom Chantry & David Dykstra

CLICK ON BOOK FOR INTERVIEW

SEE INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR'S ON CONFESSING BAPTISTS' BLOG.

In spite of the relentless attacks against this book, we are thankful to be able to announce that HOLDING COMMUNION TOGETHER has been received by brethren all over the world who have expressed their deep gratitude to the publisher and the authors.

Thanks to tips from friends and foes alike we have located and corrected numerous annoying typographical errors that made it into the first printing. A few factual corrections have also been made as they were pointed out to the authors.

Steve Martin concludes his Book Review with these words: "God's own Word shows the truth of God's servants, warts and all. I believe He will honor this honest "warts and all" telling of the first half-century of the confessional Reformed Baptist. There is much promise to our movement as we learn from our many painful memories. But there is more of Christ's glory to see and savor too! May our next 50 years show forth more of Christ's glory with more holy ministers and more healthy churches. We shall have to be honest with ourselves and repent of our many mistakes. Thank you Pastors Chantry and Dykstra for helping our movement to face the past and in doing so, doing the hard thing well!"

The closing words of the book are from the heart of Dr. Jim Renihan, as he closed his paper which was delivered in March 1998 at a minister's fraternal in Grand Rapids, MI on the subject of Reformed Baptist Associations - "I do not expect to be able to convince everyone present of the propriety of joining a formal association. In fact, that has not been my purpose in this paper. But I do hope that I have demonstrated that those of us who believe that this is the right course to follow are not merely pragmatically abandoning our commitment to Scripture. We have tried to be true to the patterns and forms of Scripture, and find much evidence that our course of action is consonant with New Testament ecclesiology. I would appeal to you brethren, if you disagree with us, to be careful in the way you describe us. We may disagree over the nature of the warrant for associations, but that does not make us any less committed to a robust Scriptural doctrine of the church.

In any case, the glory of God is our greatest concern. Let us pray for one another. We may disagree over the implementation of these particular principles. But we serve the same Savior, and have the same motivations at heart. May Jesus Christ be glorified in our lives, as we serve Him in our generation. Amen."
