Finding Humor in Your SoulCollage Cards

the value of it in so many lives, in so many ways." ~~ Lucille Ball

One element of SoulCollage card making that I believe is important and often overlooked is that of humor. How can humor possibly enter in as we travel through dark periods of time when things are collapsing on all sides, and when the light at the end of the tunnel is barely visible?  For the sake of sanity we need to lighten up and cease taking ourselves so seriously. This is true even while we work hard at healing ourselves, our communities, and our world. SoulCollage is a practice that can invite laughter even as we work to create wholeness in our personal lives and help others to create wholeness in their lives. How?

One way is to make sure that you collect images that have humorous figures and exaggerated expressions in them. Animals can have expressions that can be seen as human emotions, such as anger, fear, greed, or procrastination. One woman in my ongoing group has a card with a funny cartoon figure shown putting a huge load of baggage down on the ground beside her. When this Neter is drawn and consulted, she brings a chuckle from her creator and from the rest of us as well. We all recognize our need to put down loads of personal baggage - and the difficulty of doing it. This image reminds us of this with humor.

Another way of finding humor can come spontaneously in a reading. Often, in groups where people know each other well, a reading may begin seriously enough and then take a humorous twist, usually at the end. This is a natural and spontaneous way of not taking ourselves too seriously. Here's a recent example. A person was reading a card about achieving serenity in her difficult life, and her last sentence bubbled up like this: "Sit and enjoy your quiet space. Say the serenity prayer. ..... Make serenity part of your ritual. This takes courage and wisdom and memory ... and a maid." Well, you can imagine the heart laughter that came up for all of us! We started out stifling it to honor the reader, but soon, with the reader leading the way, we were all laughing heartily.

I believe this is the kind of laughter SoulCollage engenders, both in the creating of cards and in the readings. We laugh at ourselves in a loving way. Not always or even often, but often enough. And it's important to model and allow and encourage it. Images can be the key. Go through your cards and see if you have ones that bring a smile and may evoke a surprisingly humorous message when drawn, a message that helps you lighten up and put things into a new perspective. Enjoy sharing these images and cards with your groups.

Ethics is the fascinating material out of which the best movies and TV series are made. Ethical dilemmas thread through the kind of stories book clubs love to discuss. We will be using vignettes of such stories so you can take on a common ethical challenge as a group and learn the model of ethics described in Kylea's book, The Ethics of Caring. This model uses the chakra system to help us sort out our tangles of counter-transference and transference with self-compassion and learn to avoid or extricate ourselves from the common ethical dilemmas based on money, sex and power, and also the more subtle and difficult ones involving transformative and transpersonal work with clients.

The 6 CEU course is designed to meet the Law and Ethics requirement of CA BBS for MSWs and MFTs. It will address ethical issues for SoulCollage Facilitators, therapists and caregivers, according to the interests of the participants. Participants in small groups will discuss actual scenarios.

Testimonial:
I've purchased the app yesterday. At first I thought it was too expensive. Then I realized that due to a small market segment, there were no other way. So I quickly made my way to the App Store and acquired the app. I've uploaded my deck (89 cards) with ease and much faster than I anticipated. At first I couldn't imagine using this app, when I have my deck close at hand. I thought I would missed that tactile experience. Well, that was before I did a test reading. Then I saw that it could come quite handy when pressed for time. Shuffling a 89-card deck takes a while :-) This morning I did an actual 4-card reading. Oh my, I loved it! It was as powerful as any of the readings I have done with my actual deck. I guess Source works through technology too. Not surprising actually since it is all one anyway.
