A Time to Learn

Dear Friend of Starr King,

Now is the time to register for a January intensive or Spring online course with Starr King School! The 2010 mid-term elections have just concluded. As our nation grapples with backlash and discouragement, we need to take a deep breath and re-dedicate ourselves to building just and sustainable communities, rooted in our spiritual values.

"How to be strategic in planning our advocacy work, how to rally people effectively," these are important questions for progressive people of faith that Professor Helio Fred Garcia will be addressing in Media Skills in Public Ministry: Preaching Beyond the Pulpit, an intensive course offered January 24-28 in Berkeley. Professor Garcia has been a leader in developing the Standing on the Side of Love campaign (read our recent newsletter)which students in this course will study as a model for bringing progressive religious witness into the public square. This is just one among a wide array of life-changing courses we are offering which are open to interested lay people and ministers as well as seminarians. Starr King's courses provide progressive people of faith with the knowledge and skills needed to create just and sustainable communities, counter oppressions, and cultivate multi-religious life and learning. I welcome you to study with us and encourage you to tell others about these opportunities!

Starr King was pleased to host the Rev. Mark Kiyimba, minister of the Unitarian church of Kampala, Uganda, for a discussion of human rights in Uganda and the government sponsored persecution of LGBT people. The Kampala Central Unitarian Church is one of the few congregations in Uganda that openly welcomes and includes LGBT people. The church sponsors social action missions such as an Orphanage School for 550 children living with HIV/AIDS. See photos of Rev. Kiyimba's visit to the school, below.
