The transition from Maiden and Mother to Queen and Empress can be a difficult one, fraught with hard lessons and lots of loss. It takes great determination and courage to confront and embrace the changes brought about by the midlife passage.

It can be really helpful during this confusing time to have the inspiration, advice and encouragement of a counselor/coach/mentor - someone who has been there and done that and is ready to help you do the same.

Queen Mama Donna offers upbeat, practical and ceremonial guidance for individual women and groups who want to enjoy the fruits of an enriching, influential, purposeful, passionate, and powerful maturity.

Who Am I Now?

Crow Flag

Hail Queens!

The Queen takes up the challenge of change, and with Her eyes wide open She engages in the daunting process of learning who She is now and who She chooses to become. It is important to Her to know that Her thoughts and feelings count, that Her work and interests are meaningful, and that She, Herself, matters. Her growing Self-confidence propels Her to reach for and attain Her own authentic personal power.

When we reach our middle years we naturally pause and take stock of our lives - our career paths, our goals and aspirations, our sense of meaning. With our perspective of all of the changes and losses that we have seen and suffered, we come to realize that all we have left in our lives is time, and who knows how much of that remains? Therefore, the imperative to live fully, creatively, energetically, effectively, and consciously consumes us. We begin to question - some of us for the first time ever in our good girl lives - all previous assumptions, rules, restrictions, addictions, predictions, and predilections, which have ordered our existence. Our heart cries out for authenticity. Is the life that we are living the life that we would choose if we knew that we had only one life to live?

All of the parts of ourselves that we have previously ignored, hidden, sublimated, and suppressed are clamoring for our attention. "What about me?" the career woman yells at the homemaker and the homemaker yells right back "And what am I, chopped liver? I want my turn, too." "No, it's my turn," demands the daughter, the lover, the wife, the mother. "No, no, look at me," shouts the artist, the writer, the musician, the athlete, the entrepreneur, the adventurer, the healer, the spiritual seeker. An unlived life demands to be lived.
Heart balloon

One therapist I know calls the woman at this decisive stage of midlife "The Dangerous Woman" because she is likely to overthrow all of her previously held notions of responsibility and duty to others, and puts herself - her needs, her desires, her goals, and her dreams - first, despite the repercussions. "Women have to summon up courage to fulfill dormant dreams," writes Alice Walker. The Queen bursts forth from adversity and previous constraints, actual or imagined, to become a proficient player in the game plan of Her choice. When She operates from Her own inner guidance, She releases Her unique gifts and expressions, the sum of Her entire life experience to date, and allows them to ripen and come to fruition. And She recognizes and celebrates the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of doing so.

Whether we are married, dating, divorced, or single, it is crucial that we learn how to love, honor and cherish our Self.  If we can  enjoy our own company,  entertain and please ourselves, we will not feel dependent upon someone else to make us happy. If we can soothe and support ourselves, offer ourselves understanding and insights, we release ourselves from the need for outside affirmation. Knowing that we don't need someone else to complete and fulfill our lives affords us a new confidence in our own ability to cope and flourish. This, in turn,  allows us to participate in our familial and friendly relationships on more equal footing, with fewer unrealistic expectations and cause for recriminations.

Penelope in her dreams unweaves
What her suitors bid her weave each day,
But no longer waits for Ulysses,
Taking the long way home.
She is making her own life,
Building a kiln for her voyage
Shaping herself on the potters' wheel,
Adding daily more clay from the earth.
Her first joy is to create herself.
If Ulysses returns, she will be his equal.
He who has braved the sea & she the fire
Will have ways of knowing each other.

We have been sold a Hollywood bill of goods when it comes to romance. You know, how the handsome and suave leading man always knows exactly what to say -- just the right things at the right time in the right tone - to make his lady love swoon.

Well, the truth is that someone directs this Prince Charming incarnate. And someone - often a woman --- writes his lines for him. Lines she, no doubt, would love to hear. Wouldn't we all?

What is more passionately romantic than a lover gazing deep into your eyes and reading the feelings and desires of your true being? This is the fantasy of an ideal lover who knows the truths of your soul and who knows exactly how to satisfy you in every way.

Unfortunately, most of us are not mind readers. It is so important to be able to ask for what we want rather than challenge our lover to intuit our feelings. Expecting someone else to know instinctively what we desire and what we need in any moment is very unfair and doomed to disappoint.

It is our job to know what we want and what we like, and it is
completely up to us to articulate our needs in such a way as to give them every chance of being met.

When I consult with the couples whose weddings I will officiate, I always urge them to include in their vows not only what they promise to bring to each other and the marriage, but also to ask for what they want to receive.

Taking the responsibility for our own happiness and fulfillment is a great gift to give a lover who, presumably wants to please and satisfy us - or else why would we want to be with him/her anyway?

All those perfect words of comfort and devotion that we long to hear? We can say them to ourselves. Say them with feeling and meaning. We can show ourselves the attention and affection that we all crave - that we lavish on others, but never think to give to ourselves.

There is only one person in the world guaranteed to stay by our side until the day we die and that is us. So we better learn how to understand, nurture, love, honor and cherish ourselves so that we may know how to cherish and be cherished by another with no guessing games and no pressure.

Our primary love relationship has to be wit h ourselves. Someone once said, "In order to say 'I love you,' you have to b  e able to say 'I.'"

When we take the time know  our Self intimately and embrace all the parts of our being - body, mind, heart and spirit - whole heartedly, unconditionally, with compassion and no judgment attached, we can be a sovereign lover - not dependent and not beholden. How glorious would th at be?

You know what?
                                    I like myself.
                                    I trust myself.
                                    I know myself.
                                    I know what I want.
                                    I know what I need.
                                    I know what I have.
                                    I know what I know.
                                    I mean well.
                                    I try hard.
                                    I do good.
                                    I help.
                                    I heal.
                                    I hear.
                                    I love.
                                    I feel.
                                    I fall down.
                                    I stand up.
                                    I strive.
                                    I survive.
                                    I flourish.
                                    I thrive.

Queen of Her Own Heart - by Shiloh Sophia

By Mary J. Welsh

In their essence, ancient traditions and modern wisdom all say the same thing ... Loving yourself is the greatest gift you can give the world.

I've been reflecting on why that seems so difficult for humans to do. We spend billions of dollars every year on therapy and drugs to help us feel good about who we are and yet, I think for many of us, our hearts are not yet fully open to the miracle of our Self. I think we focus too much on healing our ego self and it would serve us better to focus our attention on our Self ... the Divine aspect of who we are. It is from this grounded knowing of being both human and divine that we are able to lift ourSelves up to a higher consciousness of acceptance and love.

Transformational programs and many books teach us 'how to love ourselves'. Intellectually we know what to do, but it is the actual daily practices that create the change from within...and that is the only place from which we can love ourselves and the world around us.

I have found the following 3 practices to be the foundation for all the inner energetic changes in my life that shift me from adrenaline survival patterns of fight, flight, or freeze to the oxytocin experience of thriving and loving.

1. EMBRACE

your wounded little girl / fearful ego with a gentle acknowledgement of present feelings, allow yourself to experience the feelings fully, and then set boundaries by speaking a firm admonishment that 'enough is enough'. Energetically hug her, listen to her, tell her she is valued and loved. Then allow your Higher Self to tell her she is ready to move on now. Repeat this as often as needed and remember...Your Divine Self is more expansive than your past pain. You can shift and experience a new reality... right now!

2. FORGIVE
for the sake of you! The 2 books that changed my whole view on forgiveness are Radical Forgiveness by Colin Tipping , and Zero Limits by Joe Vitale. The belief that there is a bigger and more beautiful tapestry in the overall scheme of life than I can see, frees me from my fearful desire to always know 'why' and to control all things and every one. This quote by Robert Brault is the essence of living life free from suffering. "Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got."

Another forgiveness practice is the loving, simple, and powerful practice of Ho'Oponopono. It sparks the internal change that is necessary for any type of alchemy. It is immediate, silent, and can be done with ease at any given moment that needs healing.

3. Play
is the key to joyful Self-love! Commit to it. Do it. Do it again, and do it again!!! Do what makes your heart sing and your soul laugh! Dance, color outside the lines, bake, run, play outside, make a tent and read under it, or ????? Playing is creative, it revitalizes our Self, it helps us remember Life is on our side! Choose to enjoy the moment and for that effort, love yourself!

Letters In Response to the JANUARY 2018 Issue:

I genuinely appreciate your encouragement to use the Lunar Eclipse as motivation to set intentions for my life. I am a new "ish" mother of a 17 month old precious boy named Felix. I live in Arkansas and from one to another thank you for guiding me to really do some work this moon! Forgiveness for myself. Allowing myself to let go of any lingering trauma of the birthing process. Forgiveness for myself and others. And my intention to no longer withdraw my emotions but to engage in new ways with new understanding.
- Sasha, AR

Thank you - so perfect - so needed. Blessings of the bright, blue moon to you, too! Warmly,
Renae, IL

If our calendar was set up as 13 4-week months, we would never have a blue moon, or, it would be even rarer. A 4-week calendar is so much more sensible, no?
- Nancy, NY

Thank you, thank you, thank you, once again, for sharing your brilliant ability to gather together so many threads of knowledge and wisdom and weave them into words and music and blessings and magic.
- Gerry, VT

thanks for that beautiful ritual description and all the lovely stuff re: the upcoming Blue Moon. In the last two nights, i (and Gail too - separately each one from the other) have exclaimed, looking out of the window, and viewing the incredible sight of the moon as it grows towards its fullness. I am going to try - f it is a nice night like tonight - to get her to do the Blue Moon ritual with me - and our 7 cats! I just know cats love full moons! I just wish we were near a blue sea, but we can't have it all - we imagine instead...Your words make the imagining possible. Thank you so much.
- Charoula, OH

Thank you, Mama Donna! Here is a moon - a blue moon! It was made in 2016 after a magical encounter with a blue moon. Just thought I'd share.

And we are glad to so. It is a joy and a privilege to share in the fortune of another woman. I recently heard Oprah say the saddest thing ever - "The hardest thing about being successful is having someone to be glad for you."

It takes a centered and confident Queen to break that pattern. There are 60 million thrones out there. One for each of us. There is plenty of purpose, passion and power for us all. May we use it well!
