The smile of a child . . . in celebration of life

Every child deserves a special day

"Most of the children that come to our emergency shelter have been moved from one place to another for long periods of time. They live a transient lifestyle with their families, many not having a bed, let alone a room to call their own," said Almarie Perez, Shelter Coordinator. She continued, "Homeless children are exposed to much more hardship than most of us can even begin to imagine. So if you tell a child that their birthday cannot be celebrated at the shelter on their special day it becomes just one more way to make them feel that they are not important."
After volunteering at Christmas, as well as cooking monthly meals at Lazarus House, Katie Lessard, a 10th grade student at North Andover High School, saw a need and followed up on it. She approached the staff with a request to bring birthday parties to the children living at the shelter. They liked the idea and helped her make it happen.
Katie explained, "I have always loved birthdays because for me it was the one day a year that I felt really special and my mom always made a big deal out of it. Every child deserves to feel that way for at least one day a year so I came up with the idea to create, 'A Special Day'. On this day everyone focuses their attention on the birthday girl or boy and they get to forget all their troubles."
'A Special Day' provides everything necessary to host a party on the child's actual birthday. A home baked cake is decorated with cartoon characters, balloons, presents, goody bags and a personalized crown are delivered to the celebration. In addition, tablecloths, blowers, hats, wall banners and streamers are supplied so the staff at the shelter can decorate the dining room before the guests arrive home at night.
"This has been an incredible experience to observe as a mother and a mentor," Kris Lessard proudly shared. "Watching and helping Katie work on this effort has provided opportunities that go beyond just learning to help others. She has to raise money, manage a budget and think seriously about how to allocate the limited funds. She also approached the owner of Lazer Craze, Greg Hughes, to donate all the goody bags for every child at the party, which he generously took on. It is interesting to see how her plans for this effort are growing to include other shelters."
"I like what we do because I can really see the impact," said Katie. "Last month we did a birthday for a little girl who really loves Tinkerbell. This child could not believe her presents, she kept kissing the gifts . . . and she had a huge smile that never ended. I was so glad we could make her feel so special!"
Homeless families face so many challenges to rise out of poverty. Now, because of a local teenager who wanted to make a difference, the parents living in the shelter are able to forget their problems for one moment in time and watch the absolute joy in the face of their child who has, in some cases, never before celebrated a birthday!
Our volunteers have a profound impact on those they serve, volunteering both on and off-site. For example, many churches and businesses form small groups to sponsor a clothing drive, make sandwiches for bagged lunches or complete projects that help improve guest care as well as our facilities. Volunteer entertainment coordinator makes a difference
by Christine Blain
"It's something I look forward to every fall, and it gets bigger and better every year . . . we're giving people hope and a place to live . . ."
As anyone who has taken part in this event could probably guess, volunteer Laura Pallone is referencing Lazarus House's annual Hike for Hope. This year's event on Sunday, October 14, 2012, will mark Laura's third time gracing Lazarus House with her positive attitude and organizational skills in her volunteer role as activity coordinator. "I have known about Lazarus House for as long as I can remember . . . their presence in the community has always been prominent," the North Andover native explained. "I have always loved walking in the Hike, it's a fun way to make a difference."
Now in its 13th year, the Hike for Hope brings together over a thousand people to walk five miles through Andover, starting and ending at Merrimack College. United in the goal of raising money for the Capernaum Place transitional housing facility, a host of participants continue to make this event a successful one year after year. Without the support of the Hike, Capernaum Place would not be able to continue serving its purpose as a place where residents learn the life skills they need to support themselves independently.
Aside from the walk itself, the Hike for Hope also offers an array of activities and entertainment throughout the day at Merrimack College . . . and that's where Laura comes in. From face painting, to three-wheeler rides, to musical performances, there's something for everyone at the Hike. Laura coordinates all aspects of the fall festival portion of the event and strives every year to introduce something new to the mix.
"Laura is amazing," Event Coordinator, Bridget Sheehy said. "In addition to working full time at the Eagle Tribune, she does all the graphic design for the Hike and coordinates the entertainment for the day. Now she and boyfriend, Ryan Perreault, have taken on the role of Co-chairing the event with our long-term Chairpersons, Betty and Roger Desjardins. Laura has a love of event planning and a passion for Lazarus House."
As fabulous a job as Laura does, she simply cannot do it alone. "Last year a couple of women helped [with activity preparation] beforehand and on the day of the Hike a lot of high school students came to help set up," she explained. With that many walkers gathering in one place, it takes an army of volunteers to make the event go off without a hitch. "Each year we need new members to join our committee with new ideas to keep this event growing," Sheehy stated. "Right now we really need volunteers working on recruitment to help promote the walk and educate our supporters on the importance of fundraising."
Whether you want to assist on the day of the Hike, serve on a committee, or both, there is undoubtedly a spot for you on the Hike for Hope team. Like many others, Laura started taking part in the Hike years ago, and now she's hooked.
If you would like to join a committee to help plan and organize one of our three major Lazarus House events please contact Bridget Sheehy, Event Manager at events@lazarushouse.org or call (978) 269-5206. We are always looking for new members to join our existing events committees to make the year 2012 a success!
