A message from Chris Purcell, Director of LGBTQI Life

Some of you may be aware of some media attention regarding a Vanderbilt faculty member and her comments via social media regarding the LGBTQI community (specifically its transgender members).

The opinion of one faculty member does not reflect the Vanderbilt I experience on a daily basis. The Vanderbilt I experience has made significant strides in developing more inclusive policies and practices for LGBTQI students while acknowledging there is still more work to do. The Vanderbilt I experience daily is full of students, faculty, and staff who engage in thoughtful and productive exchanges of ideas regarding gender and sexuality.

The Office of LGBTQI life will continue to support students and provide accurate and up to date information regarding the LGBTQI individuals across campus. Our office is proud to have done 23 trainings/class presentations thus far this semester. We have presented to everyone from RA's, VUceptors, Greek Life leaders, and various faculty/staff meetings. In addition, we are proud to have a strong and well-attended transgender affinity group that meets regularly. We will continue to build positive community and celebrate LGBTQI individuals as the strong, resilient, and diverse community that they are.

Any Vanderbilt community members looking for additional information on how to get involved, expand their knowledge around LGBTQI issues, or find support should feel free to reach out to me at  chris.purcell@vanderbilt.edu. My staff and I are always here for you.

In solidarity,

Chris Purcell
Director of LGBTQI Life at Vanderbilt
