Week 1 of 21: The Law of the Lid
The Law of the Lid: Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. ~ John C. Maxwell
Basically, this law states that how well you lead determines how effective you are. The lower your ability to lead, the lower the lid on your potential. The higher your ability to lead, the higher the lid on your potential. Your leadership ability always determines your effectiveness and the potential impact of your organization.
When you look at any organization, the top level leader is always responsible for what’s going on under the surface. There’s a natural levelling process in place – the top level leader serves as the lid of the organization, business, community, team, family. If your leadership rates an 8, then your organization’s effectiveness can never be greater than a 7. If your leadership is only a 4, then you organization’s effectiveness will be no higher than a 3.
The lid is either holding back the best people or pushing them away. I’ve seen this happen many times in both profit and non-profit sectors. Those looking to raise the bar were pushed away due to a leader’s unwillingness, or simply, their misunderstanding of this law. On the flip side, I’ve also seen people grow and prosper under the right leadership.
There has never been an organization or a team in the history of mankind that has managed to outgrow their leadership level. Your leadership lid contains your success. But here’s the good news – you can INCREASE your leadership lid!
And it gets even better! Whenever you increase your leadership lid, your business, organization, and success will follow.
You have two options in front of you right now.
You can either keep your leadership lid at the level it currently is at. Continue creating the same results, firing and hiring people on your team hoping to see a change. Or maybe try pushing harder to reach your goals, squeezing tightly to increase your productivity and performance, but keep wondering why your desires feel so out of reach.
Or you can choose to step into a journey with me as we increase your leadership level and take it to new heights. You will improve the results of your team, your overall performance and most importantly, you will get closer to fulfilling your potential… closer than you ever thought possible. This is a process, and work is required. Yet, I guarantee that it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do in your life.
The question is not whether or not you can raise your leadership lid, but whether you’re willing to do what’s necessary to do so.
