A milestone coming this Sunday

This Sunday is Pentecost -- which seems to be a fairly neglected feast day for most of us. No presents. No candy. What's to celebrate?

Only this: Pentecost marks the moment when the Holy Spirit first became manifest in the fledgling Christian community, as Jesus

promised it would be.

Until Pentecost, the apostles -- the delegates to whom Jesus had entrusted his mission before ascending into heaven -- apparently remained a mostly fearful and hesitant group. If Jesus had to grade them the day before Pentecost, I'm thinking he would have given them all an A+ in Prayer 101 -- but also the same grade in Hiding & Handwringing 101.

Clearly Jesus wanted -- and the world needed -- more from them. And beginning with Pentecost, he -- and we -- got a whole lot more.

On Pentecost the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and filled them with boldness. Immediately they headed to the streets to preach the Gospel. Recall that all but one of the remaining 11 apostles eventually gave up his life for the savior's mission.

But just as noteworthy was what they accomplished before they died. In company with St. Paul and other disciples, they spread the Gospel and made disciples across much of the vast Roman Empire and beyond.

Without their zeal and sacrifices, it's not likely any of us would even know of Jesus, much less try to follow him.

As Pentecost approaches, it's a good time to take stock of how well we are doing manifesting the Spirit in our own lives -- and to ask the Spirit to come and fill our hearts with more love and zeal to better serve and proclaim the Lord in our everyday lives.

(If you'd like to read and reflect in advance on the readings for Mass on this Pentecost Sunday, here they are. If you attend the vigil Mass Saturday, you will hear different readings.)

Good leaders make themselves easy to follow

A member of Ken Blanchard's team offers 10 tips for how to make it easier for people to follow you. This is the sort of valuable advice that leaders in every venue -- work, home, church, community -- ought to print out, read, and then review again and again at regular intervals.

Tricky business: trying to help people change

No matter what your formal relationship with someone is -- boss, parent, colleague or friend -- when you're trying to coach them to change, you've taken on a huge task.

Usually people don't change. Often they don't want to. And even when they do, more often than not they fail.

People almost never change unless at least two things are true: they really want to change and they actually know how to change.

Sadly ironic, in many cases the person trying to bring about change in another person ends up doing more to prevent change than to achieve it. But research shows that you can be an effective change agent in other people's lives if you do more of one thing and less of another.

A REMINDER

June 19 Encounter in Rockford is open to all

The Yeshua Institute will sponsor a Catholic Vision for Leading Like Encounter, its primary one-day training program, on Friday, June 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Bishop Lane Retreat Center near Rockford, IL.

Yeshua Fellow and Master Facilitator Dick Kunnert will be joined by facilitators Kathy Cebulski and Trevor Frank to present the rich mix of videos, live presentations, self-discovery activities, and small and large group discussions. (To learn more about the Encounter, click here.)

The Encounter introduces participants to biblically-based S3 Jesus-like Leadership -- servant, steward and shepherd -- which is equally applicable at work, at home, in parishes and in the broader community. Kunnert has facilitated the program in Haiti, Uganda and India, as well as in several places across the U.S.

Mindful of the Church's teaching on the crucial role of laity, participants have the opportunity to create personal plans for incorporating the principles of Jesus' leadership into their own lives. The cost of $79 includes all materials as well as a continental breakfast and lunch.
