SRF Suicide Prevention Project Conference A Major Success

The conference focused on answering questions submitted by the participants. Victor Schwartz, M.D., medical director of the Jed Foundation and co-creator of original talking points regarding 13RW, shared information regarding current trends in suicide and the national perspective on the media and suicide prevention.

Maureen Underwood, L.C.S.W., a clinician and national suicide prevention expert, provided specific, practical tools on how to have a “safe” conversation with youth about suicide.

This past Wednesday, September 20th, the SRF Suicide Prevention Research and Training Project held its first major conference - "Youth Suicide Prevention: Using the Media to Begin the Conversation" with over 300 people in attendance from across the state of New Jersey. The event was co-sponsored by the School of Education, School of Social Work, and Admissions and Provost's office.

The sorority sisters from Alpha Sigma Tau helped make the day run smoothly as they volunteered their time working the event.

The day concluded with a panel, representing the community (Maureen Brogan, LPC,Traumatic Loss Coalition), school (Susan Tellone, RN, Mental Health Association of Monmouth County) and youth/coach (Nicole D’Amore, MSW, (Monmouth graduate) Mental Health Association of Monmouth County and cheerleading coach) perspective on suicide prevention.
