A Visit to Sarah Spackman's studio to choose new work for the gallery

One of the great joys of running a gallery is working directly with our artists and there is nothing more special than a studio visit. It is a time to chat about work, see paintings in progress, experiments and ideas away from the formality of the gallery setting. Just from looking around you can learn so much about an artist's intellectual process and their inspirations.

I have worked with Sarah Spackman for many years now and a visit to her studio is always a treat; with a cup of tea or a beer depending on the time of day and a lovely long meandering conversation about art and life in general.

Her light filled studio is also home to her amazing collection of ceramics, seasonal flowers and music; Sarah is a keen ukulele and guitar player. I never tire of visiting, it is always changing and I love to see the different ceramics laid out in compositions sitting in the studio surrounded by her work.

My main reason for visiting was to choose some new paintings to exhibit at the gallery; I have taken a selection of photographs of the studio so that I could share my experience with you.

'Standing On The Flaggy Shore'

A recent work inspired by a trip to Ireland, Sarah is currently working on ideas of bringing the exterior into her compositions through shapes and forms in the background or like in this painting a hint of sea and horizon

This following group of work is much stronger in colour and reflects a period of inspiration that followed her visit to Morocco. The works as you can see are not what you could describe as directly influenced by 'Morocco' it is however the mood, bolder colour and the inclusion of patterned objects that are the subtle references
