New AADE Report Shows Impact of Diabetes Prevention Services
A new original research report demonstrates the impact of AADE Diabetes Prevention Programs.
The re
port, published in
The Diabetes Educator, demonstrates the success of the AADE Diabetes Prevention Program (AADE DPP) model of implementing the evidence-based CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) within national certified diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs. This article reports on the original 25 AADE DPP grant-funded sites including their participant's aggregate data; average weight loss, attendance, and other variables reported from 2013-2015. Results revealed that participants of AADE DPP sites on average showed successful achievement of weight loss and other requirements set forth by the
CDC's Diabetes Prevention and Recognition Program
(DPRP). The report demonstrates the success of the AADE DPP delivery model
of implementing the National DPP within DSME/S and with oversight from a diabetes educator.
Increasing access to the National DPP, through an array of networks, including certified DSME programs, will better ensure that people are able to engage in an effective approach to reducing their risk of diabetes.
AADE DPP Lifestyle Coach Training
We would like to welcome our newest group of trained Lifestyle Coaches. This September, AADE DPP Master Trainers Dawn
Sherr and Natalie Blum trained twelve new coaches in the PreventT2 curriculum.
Lifestyle Coaches gained the necessary skills to enable participants to
make long-lasting lifestyle changes to better their health and to educate community members on how the National
DPP can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
Congratulations AADE DPP Lifestyle Coaches!

Spotlight on AADE's Diabetes Preven
tion Program Team
Spectrum Health Medical Group
Grand Rapids, MI
Spectrum Health Medical Group is a multi-specialty physician group located in the West Michigan area. The Diabetes and Endocrinology Department houses their Diabetes Education Program's Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and is currently in the first year of implementation.
In September they completed the first 16 sessions of their very first
cohort. The initial group of 14 became a strongly knit group of 10 over the 16 weeks that they met and Lifestyle Coach, Emily Woodcock, RD became more confident and relaxed each week as she built relationships with all of the participants. "One gentleman enrolled is down 14.5% from his starting weight and another woman is down 8.3%!" noted Program Coordinator, Andrea House.
Their site is unique in that their health system, which encompasses the medical group, also includes the health insurer Priority Health. Priority Health is highly involved in supporting prevention strategies and they have been active in promoting the DPP for several years. In January 2016, the DPP became a covered benefit for Priority Health members.
Priority Health continues to help their site recruit participants, but they know that the continued sustainability of this program is tied to their primary care providers within the medical group. As more and more emphasis is put onto population health management, improving care delivery and chronic disease prevention, creating a DPP program that was fully integrated into their system was essential.
Spectrum Health Medical Group is working with the medical group to promote the DPP to internal physicians, help build the infrastructure for an easy referral and communication process, and use electronic registries to help identify those who would benefit by attending the program.

Recipe
Yield: 10 servings / Serving Size: 1 pie slice
For a healthy twist on an old favorite, this recipe uses white whole-wheat flour, canola oil, and almonds in the crust.
Crust
¼ cup (1 ounce) silvered almonds
1 ¼ cups white whole-wheat flour, spooned into measuring cups and leveled
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking powder
1/3 cup canola oil, chilled in the freezer for 2 hours
1 egg white
2 tablespoons ice water
2 tablespoons 1% milk
1 ½ teaspoons cider vinegar
Filling
1 can (15 ounces) solid pumpkin
2/3 cup sugar
1 ¼ cups fat-free half and half
¾ cup egg substitute
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice (or 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, and ½ teaspoon ground ginger)
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Put almonds in a food processor and pulse once or twice until coarsely ground. Add flour, salt and baking powder to food processor and pulse once or twice to combine ingredients. Add cold canola oil. Pulse once or twice again.
- Combine egg white, water, milk and vinegar in a small bowl. With food processor running, pour liquid ingredients through the feed tube. Turn off machine as soon as ingredients are mixed, about 10 seconds. Remove dough and place on a lightly floured surface. Knead ingredients 4 or 5 times to finish mixing. Roll out to fit a 9-inch, deep-dish pie pan. Trim and flute edges.
- Combine filling ingredients in a medium bowl and stir until well blended. Fill crust with pie filling, cover edges with foil, and bake 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 25 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Refrigerate within 2 hours.
