AAJC Applauds Perez Nomination

Obama Nominates Tom Perez for Labor Secretary

WASHINGTON--Today the Asian American Justice Center (AAJC) welcomed President Obama's nomination of Tom Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, to serve as his next Labor secretary.

"Even before his appointment as assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division in October 2009, Perez has long been supportive of issues important to the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities," said Mee Moua, AAJC president and executive director. "He has worked with AAJC -- and all the members of Asian American Center for Advancing Justice -- on immigration, hate crimes, language access, voting rights and other key issues."

Tom Perez will be an outstanding secretary of Labor, and we expect that he will be a powerful leader concerned about the well-being of Asian American workers, employers, and business owners as he carries out his duties," Moua added, noting that Perez was the keynote speaker at the inaugural Advancing Justice Conference in 2009. "We thank President Obama for putting forward a civil-rights champion such as Tom and urge the Senate to confirm him swiftly."
