Presented by:
Sebern Fisher

Neurofeedback and Psychotherapy

Description:
We'll begin with a definition of developmental trauma and an overview of the effects it has particularly on the brain. Early childhood neglect and abuse affect brain development profoundly making regulation of the amygdala very difficult. Fear, shame and rage rule. We will focus then on using neurofeedback to enhance affect regulation and the capacity for self through a model of arousal, affect, state, trait and identity.  We will then review the protocols that have been the most beneficial in this primary task of affect regulation and end with a discussion of basic principles in the integration of neurofeedback and psychotherapy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Professionals who complete this webinar will:
  • Participants will be able to discuss the differences  between developmental trauma and PTSD
  • Participants will be able to describe how developmental trauma leads to affect regulation problems
  • Participants will be able to list neurofeedback protocols that help quiet arousal
  • Participants be able to discuss central themes in the integration of neurofeedback and psychotherapy

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER:
Sebern has been working with traumatized people for over 35 years, first as the Clinical Director of a residential treatment facility for severely disturbed adolescents, then in talk therapy with adult trauma survivors and for the past 20 years in neurofeedback integrated with psychotherapy with both adults and adolescents. She is trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy and was the first to bring both attachment theory and Dialectical Behavior Therapy into milieu treatment. She learned about neurofeedback when a friend asked her to try it for herself. As a result of her experience, she became convinced that helping her patients learn to regulate their brains and to lower ambient arousal (fear, shame, and rage) would be critical.  Her two decades of experience with neurofeedback and psychotherapy integration led to the publication of her book, Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear- driven Brain published in 2014 by Norton. Sebern maintains a private practice in Northampton, Massachusetts and consults and trains worldwide.
