President's Message

Looking Forward to 2018!

Happy 2018! It's an exciting time for the advancing field of veterinary rehabilitation, and I'm thrilled to be the AARV president this year. The first order of business is thanking our outgoing president, Cara Blake, for all her hard work in 2017. And a huge thank you to all the outgoing board members (Carolina Medina, Leilani Alvarez, Jamie Peyton, Kristyn Richardson, and Jean Tuttle) who dedicated many years to the AARV. We have multiple new officers that we'd like to welcome, including Pedro Rivera as Industry Liaison, Jessica Bunch as University Liaison, Andrea Henderson as Secretary, and Jenn Panko as Communications Director. We'd also like to welcome Charles Evans, who will serve as the AARV's first PT liaison. Congratulations as well to Tammy Perkins Johnson, AARV Treasurer, who is the new President-Elect.
There are many things to look forward to for the AARV in 2018. We will sponsor lecture tracks at both the VMX conference in February and the IAVRPT symposium in July/August. We will continue supporting research in the field of veterinary rehabilitation through our sponsor-funded grants, and we highly encourage AARV members to take advantage of this benefit - this year Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) sponsored our largest grant to date of $5,000! We are grateful to have such generous educational sponsors which also include Royal Canin, Dr. Buzby's Toe Grips, Purina, The Honest Kitchen, PulseVet, Respond Systems, and Partners in Veterinary Therapeutics, and we will continue to foster our relationships with our sponsors. We are also expanding our reach on social media, featuring AARV-member hospitals and highlighting our sponsors, which will in turn increase recognition of our field.
Please introduce yourself to me this year! The AARV annual meeting will be at lunch on February 5th at VMX, and I encourage you to bring ideas and feedback. If you cannot attend the annual meeting, please don't hesitate to reach out via email. I'd love to hear ideas about how to help move the AARV and the field of veterinary rehabilitation forward.

Past President's Message

Happy 2018!

It has been an honor serving as AARV President this year. I thank you for this opportunity and for your support. I am very much looking forward continuing to work with the Board for another year. Dr. Megan Ridley has done a fantastic job as Communications Director, and I know she will carry this momentum forward as she leads AARV in 2018.
I would like to thank the outgoing Board members Dr. Leilani Alvarez, Dr. Carolina Medina, Dr. Jamie Peyton, Dr. Jean Tuttle and Dr. Kristyn Richardson for all their hard work over the past few years. I greatly appreciate everything that each of you have done for the organization.
This year we continued to support research in the field of rehabilitation with two grants, thanks to Dr. Buzby's ToeGrips. In addition, CRI generously sponsored an additional grant which is currently open for proposal submissions. The lecture tracks at NAVC and STAAR were a great success. The Purina-sponsored evening social at STAAR was a fun time and great opportunity to connect with fellow rehab colleagues. AARV and ACVSMR finalized the pre-symposium lecture tracks for the IAVRPT Rehab Summit in July 2018. The University Survey was distributed and responses are being analyzed, so stay tuned for the results. The PT liaison was added as a position to the Board to strengthen our relationship with the APTA-SIG.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2018!

Interested in Conducting Clinical Research?

Are you interested in conducting clinical research but don't know where to start?
Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) has created a new online course to demystify clinical research for practicing rehabilitation therapists, interns and residents.  Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research  is taught by CRI faculty member  Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR who has spent more than 30 years doing research.
The entire process from concept to publication is covered during the 10-week course. You will view online lectures, read assignments, and participate in an online live discussion with Dr. Zink each week. You will develop a research hypothesis that matches your interests and clinical caseloads, and then design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.

There are students from the first course that are now collaborating on studies and have been awarded research grants.
AARV members receive a 10% tuition discount. If you have questions or are interested in registering for the next session, email CRI at info@caninerehabinstitute.com.
