Please save the dates of October 16 - 18 for the 2014 annual convention.  You can view a line-up of speakers who are confirmed for this year's convention here.  Convention offers you an opportunity to pack in lots of educational opportunities, while getting to know the leaders in the industry during the evening social events.   This year's convention will be held in gorgeous Tubac, Arizona.  To learn more about the Tubac Golf Resort & Spa, you can visit the website.

Registration for convention, as well as the room block at the resort will be available soon.  Please contact Erica Lange if you have any questions.

I hope to see you at any or all of our upcoming events!  Have a great month!

Legislature in Final Sprint to Adjourn

by Mark Minter, Executive Director

Mark Minter
Executive Director

Members of the Arizona State Legislature are grinding their way to final adjournment of the 2014 Legislative session.  As always, next year's state budget is the driving force of the schedule.  About 300 bills are stacked in an intentional logjam created in both chambers.  The intentional delay of those bills creates negotiating items that often facilitate the final agreement on the budget.

One hotly debated issue remaining is the possible takeover of construction inspections by Federal OSHA.  The Feds have threatened this action since Arizona passed a residential fall protection law in 2012. That law raised the fall protection threshold from 6 feet up to 15 feet on single-family residential projects.  The standard for full fall protection in commercial and industrial construction has been 6 feet for several years.  This change was done at the request of the Central Arizona Homebuilders Association.

Explorer Post 811 wins ABC's National Best Practice Champion Award!

The Arizona Builders Alliance is proud to announce that Tucson's Explorer Post 811 Program has been awarded the ABC's Chapter Best Practice Champion Award!  This is awarded to chapters that demonstrates a replicable format for other chapters around the country to adopt and improve their chapter's business.

Explorer Post 811 is a worksite-based program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 through 20 years old. Exploring units, called "posts", usually have a focus on a single career field, such as police, fire/rescue, health, law, aviation, engineering, or the like, and may be sponsored by a government or business entity.  In the ABA's case, Explorer Post 811 explores careers in the construction industry by hosting tours and educational opportunities for students at member companies throughout the Tucson area.

AGC's Lean Construction Education Programs!

How lean is implemented within a construction firm can vary based on many factors and the lean transformation is most effectively driven and planned by individuals within a firm. The AGC-developed series of courses are intended for an organization's lean champions, who will design and implement a company's lean transformation strategy at the corporate and project levels.

The courses in this program will cover:

  • Unit 1: Variation in Production Systems
  • Unit 2: Pull in Production
  • Unit 3: Lean Workstructuring
  • Unit 4: The Last Planner System
  • Unit 5: Lean Supply Chain and Assembly
  • Unit 6: Lean Design and Preconstruction
  • Unit 7: Problem-solving Principles and Tools

Following completion of this program, individuals will have a deep knowledge of both the theory and application of Lean Construction and be able to sit for an exam to earn AGC's Certificate of Management - Lean Construction (CM-LC) credential.

The ABA is offering Lean Construction Units to Members.  Unit 5 will be offered May 7.  Click here to register.

ABA's Community Service Board collecting Cell Phones for Soldiers!  How can you help?

For every two cellphones the ABA collects, a soldier will receive a 60-minute calling card.  The cost for a soldier to call home from Afghanistan is $4 per minute.  Your efforts can give a soldier MUCH needed time with their family.  Last year we collected almost 800 phones.  This year, we've collected over 500 phones.  Our goal is 1,000 phones by May 23.
Please help us realize the goal by doing one or all of the following:
  • Drop off your old cell phones at the ABA offices in Phoenix OR Tucson by May 23.
  • Place a collection box in your office.  Print an 8 1/2" x 11" box poster here.  Print an 18" x 18" box poster here.   If you are in need of a collection box, please contact Erica Lange.
  • Print these flyers and distribute in to your customers, vendors, and post in your lobbies.
  • Place this website banner on your company's website with a link back to the ABA's Cellphones for Soldiers webpage.
Contact Erica Lange with questions.
