Rediscovering Main Street: Strategies for a Thriving Downtown
Planning directors and staff are invited to attend the Bay Area Planning Directors Association Spring meeting on April 28th at Nile Hall, Preservation Park located at 668 - 13th Street in Oakland. Expert speakers will discuss the desire to rediscover the classic Main Street as the heart and soul of the city.
Planners from four Bay Area cities with thriving, but very different Main Streets, will share their insights about successful downtown planning. The second session will include the perspectives of a developer, an economist, and other professionals to examine strategies that make for a successful and viable downtown, as well as future trends.
Some of the trends that will be explored are the Bay Area's numerous repurposed downtowns that capture a sense of community and place. Downtowns are a draw for employment and housing, a destination for leisure and entertainment, and a place for preserving the historic past.
Registration for this forum is $45 and
breakfast and lunch are included.

Soft Story Retrofit Model Ordinance Now Available
ABAG, in partnership with David Bonowitz, SE, has created the
The ordinance stemmed from ABAG's 2016 Resilience Policy Guidance Document: Soft Story Retrofit Program Development
report. Throughout 2016, ABAG and David worked with cities in the East Bay Corridors Initiative to identify policy priorities, culminating in a day-long workshop in October. The result was a responsive, adaptable model ordinance that incorporates local and statewide best practices for soft story retrofit policy. The ordinance provides guidance and language for cities to adapt the policy to meet local needs. If your city has been considering developing a soft story retrofit policy, you may wish to utilize our model ordinance to help you develop a localized policy quicker and with less effort.
