Dónal Maguire Concert & Lecture
Donal Maguire
Dónal Maguire
in Concert at Art Center Sarasota
Sunday, October 16, 2011
7:00 pm
Tickets $10 at the door

Dónal Maguire has been singing and playing in public on and off for forty years. Like so many other young Irish kids, Dónal was affected by the charismatic Clancy brothers and their triumphal return to Ireland from the USA, in the early 60s. Dónal's emigration to England as a fifteen-year-old paradoxically accelerated his interest in Irish music and culture.
While Dónal has been primarily associated with unaccompanied singing, he has significant other 'strings to his bow'. Dónal is a fine interpreter of contemporary material, as well as an excellent singer of traditional material, and can accompany himself on a range of stringed instruments. He is universally recognised as one of the finest players of Irish dance music on mandolin and tenor banjo.

"An evening with Dónal Maguire is a five star event... one star for his outstanding voice, one for his exceptional repertoire of traditional Irish songs, one for his unique selection of English Folk songs, one for is virtuoso mandolin and banjo work, and one for his wry wit and keen insight." -Eagle Tavern, Greenwich Village, NYC

Dónal Maguire Illustrated Lecture: "Triumph Over Adversity"
The Life and Times of Michael Davitt
Monday, October 17 at Art Center Sarasota
Tickets $10 at the door
Michael Davitt played a significant role in Ireland's 19th Century history -- yet, he is hardly known. The lecture tries to redress this by reflecting his massive contribution to social/political change in Ireland and the setting up of events that eventually led to independence. His lectures and writings on a broad canvas of social issues were decades ahead of their time. His advocacy of the "passive non-violent resistance" approach was taken up by Gandhi and subsequently Mandela.

Gaudi

Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was a Spanish Catalan architect and the best-known representative of Catalan Modernism. Much of Gaudí's work was marked by the four passions of his life: architecture, nature, religion and his love for Catalonia. Gaudí meticulously studied every detail of his creations, integrating into his architecture a series of crafts, in which he himself was skilled, such as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging and carpentry. He also introduced new techniques in the treatment of the materials, such as his famous trencadís, made of waste ceramic pieces.

SAVE THE DRIVEWAYS!
Side DrivewayHave you noticed all of the building improvements at Art Center Sarasota?

The Sculpture Garden
will be completely redone as an outdoor expansion of the center to be used for events or just for enjoying the surroundings in peace. This improvement is being funded by supporters Sally & Sam Shapiro for whom the garden is named.

One of our unwavering supporters, Bubsy Becker is very concerned with the appearance of the side driveways which will be an eyesore with the new and improved garden. Bubsy says that their condition is due to the fact that they are 30-40 years old and badly needing repair. After getting quotes, Bubsy says we can completely restore them for $4,300. To do the job, Bubsy will generously donate $2,000. He is challenging ACS members and the community to come up with the balance of $2,300. All funds will be used only for the driveway improvements with any extras put back into building improvements. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
Make a difference at Art Center Sarasota!
If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to Art Center Sarasota with a notation "Driveways" or call and donate over the phone.
