President's Message
Lisa Andrew, Region 8 President 2015-2016

It is hard to believe that just a few short weeks ago we were basking in the slower pace of July. Now students and staff are in full swing of the 2015-2016 school year. As we move back into our routines, the lonely position of administration will once again emerge. No matter yo LisaA ur location, you are probably the "lone" whatever in the building. Isolation can cause tunnel vision and fatigue and lead to burn out by October 1.
This could be your lot, but as a member of ACSA Region 8 you have access to over 900 other "loners" who would like to collaborate and communicate with YOU! Toward this end, this year Region 8 will focus on conversations...Lets Talk! Our regional goals this year are tied to state ACSA's strategic plan and include:
  • Courageous conversations about equity
  • Crucial conversations about legislation
  • Compassionate conversations about support
Our co-chairs of Programs, Sheila Walters and Jenay Enna are planning two awesome Leadership Forums focused on equity and support. President-Elect Adora Fisher along with other women leaders of Region 8 are planning Women's Leadership Network events, including a Women's Leadership Conference in January. Vice President of Membership, Tony Frascone is planning an Oktoberfest Scavenger Hunt, February Charter Chili Cook-off and May Legislative Update & New Member Social in collaboration with new Legislation Policy Committee representative Brett McFadden. Vice President of Legislative Action, Anisha Munshi has already connected charter presidents with local legislators and will continue to foster these relationships through Legislative Action Day in April. We will continue to honor and recognize the outstanding members in our region during our annual Regional ACSA Awards dinner in May. See the article about ACSA Awards for how to nominate and contact information for Award co-chairs Cheryl Jordan and Joann Vaars. New this year, Members-at-Large Brian Schmaedick and Ramis Ahrary will be supporting our new Aspiring Administrators Charter as they launch their first year focused on those aspiring to be administrators. Support for first year principals will also be a focus for Brian and Ramis with the support of Mentor Coordinator Iris Berke and Internal Affairs Representative Bob Lowry.
Do you have the ACSA App on your smart phone? Member-at-Large Elizabeth Brumbaugh will be working to ensure that you will be able to stay connected to all our comings and goings through this App. Be sure to click YES for push notifications. Our Communications Chairperson, Tabitha Kappeler-Hurley is also working to ensure our page on the ACSA website contains detailed information about the Region. Just go to acsa.org, click on the Regions tab in the upper left-hand corner, and scroll down to Region 8!
Others working on your behalf include Region Secretary Bhanva Narula, Region Treasurer Ann Jones, Region Executive Director Pat Einfalt, Past President Tanya Krause, Member-at-Large Colette Zea, ACSA State Board Members Will Ector & Eric Andrew, and Ocho Editor Ginny Fahimi.
We are at the beginning of a very promising year. To realize our goals each member's voice is important in our conversations about equity, legislation, and support. I look forward to working alongside and learning from each and every one of you. Please feel free to contact me or any other Executive Board member so that we can provide the support that you need to be successful this year.

Program Update
Jenay Enna (Kiddoo) and Sheila Walters - Program Co-Chairs

Let's engage in conversations with each other around our theme of "Let's Talk: Equity, Advocacy and Support"  this year at our ACSA Region 8 Leadership Forums!   Our first event takes place on Thursday, September 10 at Fiorillo's Restaurant in Santa Clara from 5:30-7:00 p.m. We are already at full capacity for this event featuring Lisa Lasky as our guest speaker from the National Equity Project. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 19, 2016 for our next Leadership Forum (more details to come in the near future). Conveniently, this event will also be held at Fiorillo's. Finally, we will come together to celebrate our outstanding ACSA Leadership Award Winners at our Awards Ceremony and Dinner on May 13, 2016. All programs are free to ACSA members!

Legislative Action Update
Anisha Munshi - Leg. Action Rep

The August retreat was very informative and members had an opportunity to meet some of our local legislators. The panel comprised of Senator Bob Wieckowski, Assembly Member Evan Low, Assembly Member Kansen Chu, and a staff member from Senator Jim Beall's office. Eric Andrews facilitated a question/ answer session where legislators shared their goals for education, ways in which members could connect with them, and most importantly, ways in which we can bring our issues to their attention.  The panel discussion was followed by districts meeting with their local legislators in small groups.
We will have another opportunity to advocate on behalf of our students in April. Please mark your calendars. Legislative Action Day is scheduled for April 3 and 4. It would be great to see all of you in Sacramento with your district teams!

SCCOE Charter News
Elizabeth Calhoon-Brumbaugh, Charter President

The Santa Clara County Office of Education AA (COEAA) kicked off our first 2015-16 meeting with our new executive board on August 28, and we are so excited to dig into the topic of Let's Talk this year!  Our Scholarship recipient, Dahlia Wilkes has already registered for classes at Foothill College and we're excited to see where we KNOW her bright future will take her.
In September and October, we're planning and looking forward to a membership drive, bringing in a dynamic speaker to talk to our leadership about equity and surprising all of our ACSA COEAA members with a little surprise during the Week of the Administrator, Oct. 11-17! We also got a jump-start on brainstorming how we can ensure we have a great recipe to contribute at our Regional Chili Cook-Off.
We also refreshed our website and all our information can now be found at http://bit.ly/acsacoe - feel free to reach out or contact us for more information! Elizabeth Calhoon-Brumbaugh, President, can be reached at [email protected]
