Long ago, at many times and  in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created  the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and  the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
Hebrews 1:1-3a

In the last few weeks, there has been discussion among talk show hosts as to whether or not Vice President Mike Pence can actually hear God speaking to him.

Mr. Pence declares himself to be a devout  Christian and states that God speaks to him and guides him in his decision making.

The two talk show hosts I heard speak on the subject were both raised in Christian households. One proclaims himself as a Christian, but both seemed cynical that anyone should be able to hear from God and if they are hearing voices, then they are probably mentally ill.

Now here is a disclaimer. This article is not about politics. This article is a clarification as to whether or not a Christian can hear directly from God.

The author of Hebrews declares that our forefathers heard from God via the prophets. Jesus, God incarnate, spoke to the disciples and to the crowds - normal, everyday people - directly.

Now, the Lord speaks directly to us through the Holy Spirit and the Bible, which is His Holy Word. We hear his voice in our hearts and minds and know it is His voice because it is in perfect alignment with His Holy Word.

Is it odd that Vice President Pence states that he hears God speak to him? Actually, it would be odd if a Christian didn't hear God's instructions for his or her life directly!

In his book, Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby states that if a Christian cannot hear directly from God, then that person has a serious spiritual problem!

A two-way prayer life is essential to our spiritual health and growth. To know God's voice, we must know His Word. Without that knowledge, how can we discern the counterfeit voice of the enemy?

Do not be confused or deceived, God speaks! If we cannot hear Him, then there is a curable problem with OUR spiritual life.

Our Vision Statement Is:

The Anglican Church of Saint Paul will become a church united in love, growing spiritually through small groups of individuals studying God's Holy Word, praying for one another and the blessing of the church, and working towards the goal that the Lord's "salvation may reach to the ends of the earth." (Isaiah 49:6)

The following scriptures summarize our church's Core Values:

OUR PRIORITY - First of all, seek God. "... seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:33)

OUR DIRECTION - Come out of the wilderness to the LORD and beckon others to join us. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

OUR PURPOSE - Be healed and become a place of healing and peace. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27)

OUR REMINDER - In all things, it is the LORD who gets the glory. "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty." (Zechariah 4:6)

OUR REWARD - Keep our eyes upon the prize. "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it." (Revelation 2:17)
