California: Label genetically engineered food!

A bill was recently introduced in the California legislature to require labeling of genetically engineered (GE) food. Authored by Senator Noreen Evans, SB 1381 is a simpler, clearer version of Proposition 37.

And while it was narrowly defeated in 2012, polls both before and after the Prop 37 election showed 67% of Californians supported a state GMO labeling law. But the opposition, including Monsanto and other GE corporations, was able to pull ahead by spreading misinformation about the initiative.

With this new bill, we now have another opportunity to ensure GE food is clearly labeled, as a majority of Californians want. We have a right to know what's in our food and how it's grown.

This bill is especially important due to the fact that most genetically engineered crops are designed to be pesticide-resistant, which spurs even greater use and concentration of pesticides in food.

And if you live in Senator Evans' district, please thank her for her dedication and determination.
