At the Democratic National Convention last week,
Sr. Simone Campbell shared her journey with the "Nuns on the Bus" this summer - a nine-state, 2,700 mile pilgrimage in support of fellow sisters and those they serve.
She told the delegates and the nation, "Our faith strongly affirms that we are all responsible for one another: I am my sister's keeper. I am my brother's keeper," and that the Romney-Ryan budget "failed a basic moral test, because it would harm families living in poverty."
Although Sr. Campbell's speech was given at a political convention, it was not a political speech. For Catholic Democrats, especially, it was an expression of her faith and of our faith, one that we learned from the nuns and priests in our parishes and that our parents and grandparents taught us to live.
Throughout Sr. Simone's speech, and for the next several days,
Catholic Democrats received hundreds of Tweets from Catholics who were consoled and heartened by her witness of faith. People were responding to a Tweet asking if there were any other "Proud Catholic Democrats" watching Sr. Simone. And there were. We had never experienced anything like it before.
Said one, #ProudCatholicDemocrat and happy to know I'm not alone!
Said another, Sr. Simone makes me proud to be a Catholic again! Thank you for renewing my faith!
And yet another, Sr. Simone proved it to me that I can be a good Catholic AND a Democrat... I am a @CatholicDems !
At a time when so many - even within our Church - question how we can be both Catholic and a Democrat, we thought that you would want to join in solidarity with Catholic Democrats across our nation and also to thank Sr. Simone. As one of our supporters said,
