Greetings!

This month we are enthused to be able to share photos of the plot of ground under consideration for the ACU main campus. Our header shows a panoramic view looking out from the location and the position of the land relative to Lusaka. Below is a satellite image of land in Kakote (South of red marker 'A').

ACU's Board Chairman, John Chundu, Treasurer, Patricia Kumwenda, and entrepreneur Amon Silwimba, along with Ken and Lisa Turnbull were accompanied by Senior Headman Chipwalu and HeadmanKakote to view the land that Chieftainess Nkomesha is making available at no charge to ACU. The land is located about 13 km (8 mi) SE of Lusaka, several km off the nearest asphalt road.

The ACU land committee will reconvene to examine the land and make their recommendation to the Board. Amongst those of us who saw the land, a few things were noted. The view was beautiful: a panoramic view of surrounding valleys and mountains that would make for a stately university setting. Electricity was not too distant from the site. There appeared to be water based on the valley dry river bed containing banana and other vegetation that requires good water access, but that will be an important criteria for land evaluation. There was good arable land in the direct vicinity of the land, so the need to see what options would be available to include some of this land will be pursued. Please continue to pray for God's wisdom in directing our way ahead.
TLITLI Partnership Opportunity

The Formans and Turnbulls

In mid April, Ken and Lisa Turnbull were pleased to host Howard and Deborah Foreman for four days in Lusaka, Zambia. Howard is an experienced teacher and trainer of pastors having been a missionary in France for 12 years, followed by 6 years of extensive pastoral training opportunities in Russia. He received his PhD from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK in Church History/Historical Theology, uncovering the pastoral reform and teaching ministry of a Pre-Reformation French theologian. Currently Howard is Director of African Ministries for Minneapolis, MN based, Training Leaders International which was launched in 2009, with the help of Bethlehem Baptist Church and in conjunction with Desiring God. Its mission as a sending agency is to provide theological training around the world. Under the direction of national pastors, they serve local churches, denominations and missionaries who see the ministry as an effective way to meet the lack of theological teaching.

Dr. Foreman was inspired to learn of ACU's desire to incorporate a Kingdom worldview in all the academic disciplines, in order to develop whole-life transforming, biblically balanced Christians who will impact their society for Christ, not only as pastors, but in all aspects of society. He perceived the university as the academic out-workings of the Reformed Baptist Churches of Zambia, an indigenous group of churches that hold strongly the Puritan Reformed faith. "I found them to be spiritually vibrant, doctrinally strong, and biblically literate churches, not an everyday occurrence in Africa." Dr. Foreman assessed that they are the bedrock for the university, "instilling zeal for God's Word and living it out in society." He also found Dr. Ken Turnbull to be a man of vision, intensity, and courage, crediting their "nonstop" discussions as having helped him capture the vision and passion behind ACU, while bringing to the table, the potential for a partnership between TLI and ACU.

"The ACU Seminary, with its strong emphasis on Christian scholarship, a biblical worldview of education, and practical pastoral training, combined with ACU, offers an additional opportunity to partner in the development and training of pastors and leaders for local church ministry in southern Africa," Howard emphasized. He further observed that as the continent of Africa seeks to raise its abilities to compete in the modern world, the higher education that ACU/ACUS aims to achieve, will very likely be an open door in which new African leaders and leaders for the Church in Africa will emerge.

"As a man thinks within himself, so he is." (Prov. 23:7). "Thus, if you change the way a person thinks," Dr. Foreman advocated, "you can change the person and ultimately a society." He concluded that those interested in making a difference in Africa, should get behind the venture through prayer, support and involvement, adding, "I would highly recommend ACU/ACUS."

Debi & Howard Foreman

"It was a joy to fellowship with Howard and Debi, sharing in their mission passion and experiences," Dr. Ken Turnbull remarked. "I greatly appreciate the vision and work for which TLI is investing kingdom resources." He emphasized that in Africa, it is imperative that the still maturing church planting works embrace discipling the next generation. "This is the purpose for ACU, and it is TLI's passion," Ken noted. While ACU's needs may be pushing TLI in advance of their present growth, Dr. Turnbull encouraged supporting partners to pray that we may mesh our needs for Christ-centered faculty with their desire to send out such faculty and see God's glory radiate through the fellowship of our kingdom effort.

One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. ~Psa 145:4

You cannot be a faithful Christian if you do not take seriously the question of biblical worldview and how it ought guide both your thinking and behavior. To ignore this is to deny the practical relevance of Scripture to the greater part of our daily lives.

We thank God for the persevering prayers of our partners regarding the location of the land on which ACU will be built, and acknowledge the hard work of senior headman, Chipwalu in helping to identify it.

God's goodness was also evidenced this month as He stirred many hearts to act in response to the appeal for support by Ray & Peggy Warwick. By virtue of His all knowing direction and generous provisions they hope to be able to move to Zambia by the first of the year.

Cheryl Snyder

Cheryl Snyder (Yakima,  WA) Physician, D.O.
with a specialty in
Emergency Medicine is flying to Zambia on May 29.  While there she intends to plant a seed of the ACU vision, while assessing interest in a pioneer launch of an ACU medical program. May God open many doors and pave the way for Cheryl as she begins the process of raising support to serve with ACU in Zambia.

On behalf of the ACU Board, Prof. Alfred Mwanza, Bruce Button and Dr. Ken Turnbull attended the "Institute of Excellence" conference in Nairobi, Kenya (May 8-11, 2012).  It provided a unique opportunity for the leaders of 13 tertiary institutes to gather and reflect on sound theological and educational principles, share best practice ideas and inaugurate a platform for ongoing networking.  Please pray that as more people learn about the vision and purpose of ACU across the continent of Africa, God will be greatly glorified.
