From Our Executive Director
|
Fall is usually such a beautiful time of year in Humboldt County, but the thought of the damage and loss sustained by so many in the Northern California fires weighs heavy. While there is nothing I can say to mitigate that loss, I can say that sometimes disaster brings out the best in us. While stories of tragedy fill the media, there are other stories as well. Stories of kindness and courage and generosity. Generosity evident here locally as organizations and individuals rallied to gather supplies (and money), to head south to assist and to volunteer.
These disasters also served as a good reminder to appreciate our everyday normal days. To get to know our neighbors, and to appreciate our friends and community.

AEDC Supports International Studies Students
Humboldt State University is offering a new International Studies critical thinking class this year.
The goal of this new class is to help students become more involved with the wider community so they can gain a better understanding of Humboldt as a whole, said Alison Holmes, program leader for the International Studies major. The
service learning component is an added piece and Danielle Saldana, junior; Emily Mandaville, freshman and Ileanna Spoelstra, freshman are working with Susan Seaman from AEDC to compile a series of 9 to 12 one-page business profiles of local companies with international connections.
"Humboldt is rightly proud of the beauty of our area and what we call the 'Redwood curtain', but our mission is also to help them become global citizens. We are very grateful to the business community for helping these students see the complexity of the relationship between the local and the global in the every day business you do," said Holmes.
The students are touring three businesses together and will then proceed independently for the remaining profiles. The businesses toured include Jessicurl, Lost Coast Brewery and Dick Taylor Craft Chocolates.
“I always appreciate any opportunity to work with HSU students, because the more we can get them familiar with our community, the more opportunities they can see for themselves in Humboldt,” said Susan Seaman, program director for AEDC and also advisory committee member for HSU’s Center for Community Based Learning. “This fits into our desire to engage and retain young professionals as a way to build a more vibrant community.”
