Industry
Industry Survey on Equine Emergency and Disaster Preparedness

Thank you to those who completed the equine industry survey on emergency and disaster preparedness. We received 221 responses to the survey that closed on November 23. The outcomes of this survey show a need for education and training in practical emergency and disaster preparedness. The data collected will be used by industry to develop a plan for the equine industry and guidelines for Alberta horse owners and custodians. A report on survey results is being prepared. For more information on the project click here.

Congratulations on the two Greenhawk gift card winners, Trisha Adams and Nicole Dievert!

AFAC Awards of Distinction

The Alberta Farm Animal Care Awards of Distinction were initiated in 2001 to recognize individuals or groups who have made exceptional contributions in the field of livestock welfare. These individuals or organizations work hard to advance the mandate of AFAC and the welfare of livestock in Alberta. They apply new, innovative ideas and management practices to improve and ensure high standards of animal wellbeing. They understand the public's need for assurance that farm animals are raised humanely. They can be held up as examples of those who are making a difference.  Nomination deadline is March 1, 2017.

Please submit nominations via email to Kristen Mortensen at kristenm@afac.ab.ca.
Comments or questions? Contact the AFAC office at 403.652.5111.
National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) Priority Welfare Topic Areas for the Transportation Scientific Committee

The NFACC aims to initiate an update to the 2001 transportation Code of Practice in 2018. However, first steps toward this objective are being undertaken now, including the establishment of the Scientific Committee. This committee develops a report synthesizing the results of research relating to key animal welfare issues for the Code being developed.

We are also seeking your input as to the priority animal welfare issues during the transport process that should be covered by the Scientific Committee report.

Feature Store Item: i am Cadillac - Great Christmas Gift!

THE HORSE NAMED CADDIE knows he can't be the leader of the herd. Stocky, powerful and stubborn, he watches leaders come and go on the Triple R Ranch, but he will never be in their shoes.

He gets the opportunity of his life when a new colt arrives and he is trusted with the task of teaching the young horse the ways of the herd. Will this spirited colt live up to the high expectations placed on him? And can Caddie prepare him to be the new leader the ranch so desperately needs when violent weather, ferocious predators and human errors threaten to destroy them all?
