The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod encourages you to sign up to volunteer for the 29th Annual Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert, held on August 10, 2014 featuring The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra conducted by Keith Lockhart with Celebrity Guest Conductor, Charlie Rose.

POSITIVELY DIFFERENT Scholarship Winners Announced
The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod teamed up to support local art students through the Second Annual POSITIVELY DIFFERENT Arts Foundation Scholarship Program, and will award $1,000 to five local students for undergraduate studies in arts-related fields in 2014.
Positively Different Scholarship winners include:
- Jonathan Almonte from Cape Cod Regional Technical School who plans to study Graphic Design and Visual Arts this Fall at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Jonathan has been awarded a scholarship through the Arts Foundation before, having placed second in the 2013 Cape-Wide Art Scholarship Competition to design the official T-Shirt for the Annual Pops by the Sea concert.
- Michayla Kelly from Nauset High School, will study Dance at Goucher College in Baltimore.
- Sherley Ann Belleus, also from Nauset High School has plans for a degree in Music Performance from Ithaca College as a vocalist.
- Robyn Whaples from Sandwich High School, plans to go into the Visual Arts and obtain a degree in Animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Robyn also received an Honorable Mention this year in the AFCC's Cape-Wide Art Scholarship Competition.
- Ciara Bruning from Barnstable High School will use her Visual Arts scholarship to pursue a degree in Art Therapy at Lesley University.
Scholarship applications were accepted from students who are graduating from a public or private school or home education program living on Cape Cod in the spring of 2014, and who were accepted into a degree program to an accredited college or university. Selections were made based on the quality of the submissions, excellence of the work and academic achievement.

The 29th Annual Pops by the Sea Commemorative Painting by commissioned local artist, Matthew M. Schulz will be on display at Citizens Bank in Hyannis in advance of the Pops by the Sea Benefit Auction, held on June 21.
Mr. Schulz was commissioned to create this year's commemorative painting and limited edition lithograph, to be auctioned at a special VIP reception on June 21 at the Hyannisport Club to benefit the Arts Foundation.

WHAT for Kids: The Surfside Snoops and the Ghost of Great Island, July 10 - August 28: A ghost of a pirate is terrorizing visitors to Great Island, lobbing cannonballs at boats in the harbor and threatening to deep six the proposed development of a multi-billion dollar resort and housing complex. Who's behind these terrifying apparitions? One thing is certain: evil is once again stalking and it seems only the Surfside Snoops can bring it to bay. Written and directed by Stephen Russell.
The Julie Harris Display, now - September from noon - 6 pm: As part of WHAT's 30th Anniversary Season tribute to Julie Harris, WHAT has curated a memorial display in an effort to inform the public of Julie's deep relationship with theatrical organizations and individuals on Cape Cod. Visitors of WHAT will have the opportunity to see Julie's life in retrospect through a video created by Francesca Hames for the December 3 Memorial in New York, as well as stories and memorabilia from the individuals and theater companies she touched directly on Cape Cod.

Bill Liebeskind: We Make Art: 1,001 Artist Portraits, now - June 14: New York artist Bill Liebeskind has spent two years fashioning 1,001 heads of artists from modeling clay. This fun and funky collection is displayed on a series of shelves running around walls of the museum's Polhemus Savery DaSilva Gallery.
Six of One, now - June 22: Every few months over the past three years, six nontraditional Cape artists have gathered in one another's studios to critique each other's work. The artists in question - Joe Diggs, Sarah Dineen, Richard Neal, Jackie Reeves, Andre van der Wende and James Wolf - have highly individual styles, but share a passion for frank dialogue concerning contemporary painting. The tie that binds the group is readily apparent in this exhibition.

Bank of Cape Cod's Falmouth Branch presents a new exhibit titled, Make A Splash featuring work by the Members of the Upper Cape Camera Club, now - June 17.
Photographers in the club have spent the last several months preparing for the Make A Splash exhibit and will feature many different interpretations of that theme. The photos will be a mix of entries from new members as well as long-standing club members with a goal of about 30 pieces in the exhibit.

Cultural Center of Cape Cod Upcoming Art Receptions
National Juried Show of Pastel Painters will run in all Four Galleries, now - July 13 with a free art reception on June 21, 5 - 7:30 pm followed by a talk by the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod's President, Sherry Rhyno: The Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod presents its 17th national juried exhibition showcasing paintings in the medium of soft pastel, created by some of the country's most talented and renewed pastel artists. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. Come meet the artists and enjoy the art and refreshments.

Jan Lhormer, Betty Fuller and Susan Lyman also serve as juror's for the Center's second open juried exhibit to be featured in the upper galleries.
Call Me Ishmael, a juried show in the upper galleries will also run, now - June 29: This juried show is presented in tandem with the Main Stage production of Moby-Dick! The Musical! which is a mixture of high camp, wild anachronism, and double entendre. Two and three dimensional work celebrating any interpretation of Moby-Dick was accepted.

St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Harwich will display the Otto Dix Art Exhibit, now - August 10.
Otto Dix (1891-1969), is one of the greatest German Expressionist artists of the first half of the 20th century. Talk by Artist and Author, Ian Roberts at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church
St. Christopher's Episcopal Church hosts A Talk by Artist and Author, Ian Roberts on June 16, 4 pm.
This talk will address the fears, misconceptions, "should", and confusion around courageous authentic expression. Ian Roberts has painted for over 40 years. He has made several videos on painting and written two books, Mastering Composition and Creative Authenticity: 16 Principles to Clarify and Deepen Your Artistic Vision. Currently Roberts is writing a book on beauty. This talk is free and open to the public. Honoring the Natural Habitat at the Fort Hill Historical Landscape Restoration
Cape Cod Natural Seashore Park has collaborated with the Cape Cod Light House Charter School to create an art project, Honoring the Natural Habitat at the Fort Hill Historical Landscape Restoration installed at the Skiff Hill/Indian Rock area of the Fort Hill Site, with a public gathering to honor the students' work on June 14 at 2:30 pm.
Cape Cod Light House Charter School students and art teacher, Deb Greenwood, dance-artist-educator, Rebecca Burrill, and Woods artist and historian, Dick Noyes were involved in this collaborative art project involving Cape Cod Natural Seashore Park. With wood donated by the Park, students carved organic and natural forms, abstract as well as representative of animal and plant life of the surrounding landscape. The full project has been documented for local TV broadcasting at a later date. This project has been funded in part by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore, the Virginia Wellington Cabot Foundation, and the Cape Cod Five Foundation.

Cultural Center of Cape Cod Announces 12th Annual 5K Run/Walk for the Arts
Cultural Center of Cape Cod announces their 12th Annual 5K Run/Walk for the Arts on June 14, 9 am.
The whole family can be part of this event in the scenic Bass River village of South Yarmouth. Choose between the 5K competitive run, 5K non-competitive walk, or kids' fun run for children 10 and under. Walkers begin at 9 am, runners begin at 9:30 am, and the Fun Run begins after the runners and walkers have returned. The first 100 pre-registered participants will receive a commemorative Run/Walk for the Arts t-shirt!

The 16th Annual Hands on the Arts Festival will take place rain or shine at the Windmill Green in Eastham from June 14 - 15, 10 am - 5 pm.
Everyone can enjoy the creations of local artists and crafters at a juried show and attend a variety of music and dance performances, while children can have hands-on experience with arts, theater, movement, music and other creative and fun activities. There will also be 2 performances of Pinocchio, a marionette show with musical accompaniment. Hands on the Arts is proudly sponsored by the Eastham Cultural Council.

Big Bugs Creating a Buzz at Heritage Museums & Gardens
Heritage Museums & Gardens welcomes you to witness their bug invasion on a large scale with David Rogers' Big Bugs, now - October 26.
Rogers creates insect sculptures, such as 25-foot-long ants and dragonflies with 17-foot wingspans, using various combinations of wood and forest materials. The effect is role reversal of dimension and perception. Big Bugs, which will include three ants, an assassin bug, a dragonfly and a damselfly, a praying mantis, a spider on a web, a ladybug and a Daddy Longlegs, will make for interesting landscape settings throughout the Museum grounds!

Cultural Center of Cape Cod announces upcoming Silvard in Concert on June 14, 7:30 pm.
This performance will be filled with Silvard's all-time favorites spanning the last 60 years: songs from popular musicals and all-time favorite movies, classics that everyone knows, and original compositions, in addition to "free flow" pieces that he composes on the spot. Let's Fall in Love featuring the Cape Symphony at the Melody Tent
The Cape Symphony makes their Melody Tent debut with Let's Fall in Love on June 20, 8 pm.
This performance conducted by Artistic Director Jung-Ho Pak, features guest vocalists Mark Mahar and Sami Stevens. Be sure to join this performance to hear the music you know by heart. Members of the Cape Symphony will play melodies from many of the most cherished composers of all time, including Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart and more.

Meeting House Chamber Music Festival Season Premiere at Highfield Hall
The Meeting House Chamber Music Festival's season premiere featuring Irini Muresanu will be held at Highfield Hall & Gardens on June 22, 4 pm and will continue through July 28.
This upcoming June 22 performance will feature Romanian violinist Irini Muresanu. Irina has won the hearts of audiences and critics alike with her exciting, elegant and heartfelt performances of the classic, romantic and modern repertoire. Joining Irini will be cellist Karen Ouzounian and pianist Donal Enos for a piano trio.

Local Lens Series presents The Refuge Media Project, June 14 at 7:30 pm: Refuge...Caring For Survivors of Torture, is an outstanding documentary from the Refuge Media Project. Filmmaker Ben Achtenberg of the Refuge Media Project will be present to discuss the film. The cast numbers refugees in the U.S. are staggering, but what makes a greater impression in this stand-out documentary are the small individual stories from survivors and those who offer them care and support as they resettle in the U.S.

Sandwich Town Hall hosts Near and Far, a show bringing together artists from Cape Cod to Philadelphia to share innovative new works with the community and each other, on June 20, 8 pm.
The evening will showcase a conglomeration of performances including contemporary dance, music, poetry, theatre, as well as visual art and film. This performance is presented by professional dancer and choreographer Meghan Carmichael of Sandwich and dancer and acting student Jeremy Haig of Orleans. Proceeds will benefit the TIDES Dance Company Scholarship Fund to help local Cape Cod Dancers further their education in the performing arts.

In an effort to avoid financial ruin, a girls' reform school mounts a production of Moby Dick to raise funds to save their school in this energetic mixture of high camp, salty innuendo, and 27 musical numbers. Directed by Tristan Divincenzo, written by Robert Longden, with music and lyrics by Longden and Hereward Kaye.

Cultural Center Announces Call For Submissions
8th Annual National & Regional Poetry Competition, with a Submission Postmark Deadline on June 16, 2014: A National Prize of $1,000 will be awarded for a single, unpublished poem that has not won 1st prize in any national competition. Open to all U.S. residents 18 years & older. A Regional Prize of $250 will be awarded for a single, unpublished poem (that has not won 1st prize in any national competition) by an adult resident of Cape Cod, Nantucket, or Martha's Vineyard. All proceeds will support the Cultural Center's literary programs. General Guidelines: submit up to 3 poems of any style or subject totaling no more than five pages with an entry fee of $15. All entries should be typewritten on plain, white paper. The poet's name should not appear on any page except the cover page, which should include name, address, phone number, and email address, the titles of the poems submitted, and a brief bio.
Heavenly Bodies: The Human Form, Transformed, juried exhibition with a drop-off date on November 18, 9 am - 5 pm: All work in the exhibit will depict the human form, transformed in some interesting and creative way. A dozen artists have been invited to transform mannequin torsos into art. The results will populate the Great Hall for the duration of the exhibit, November 19 - December 7. Submissions of work that communicates ideas, stories, relationships, metaphors, and epiphanies are strongly encouraged. Although digital work will be considered, you are discouraged from using form without function. The transformation should be metaphoric or layered in some way.
The Art of Recovery, with a Submission Drop-Off Date on November 18, 9 am - 2 pm: The Cultural Center of Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Justice for Youth Collaborative will host the Art of Recovery Exhibit in the Center's Board Room Gallery from November 19 - 30, 2014. Artists are invited to submit work that reflects or is the result of a personal recovery from a physical, mental, spiritual, or emotional trauma... or from any debilitating experience. Original work in any media will be considered. All submissions must be prepared for hanging or display. There is no submission fee, but donations are most welcome. There will be a 30% commission on art sales. This will be a juried exhibit, and emerging artists are encouraged to submit work for consideration. Both organizations are more interested in the creative expression of those who have won a battle of are in the process of recovery that in credentials.
