Cape Cod Museum of Art Current Art Exhibitions

All About sEVEn: A Multimedia Exhibit by 49 Cape Women Artists, now - March 30: Many people consider seven a lucky - or even magical - number. There are seven days in the week, seven continents, seven notes in the musical scale and seven colors in the rainbow. This exhibition will explore seven themes related to the number seven, each as interpreted by seven female artists - for a grand total of 49 participants! Each group of seven artists chose their own theme, with most eschewing the more obvious options. The themes they elected to pursue are as follows: Spectrum, Elements, Pleiades, Seven Deadly Sins...?, Intentions, Seven Generations, and Formal 7.

Through Young Eyes: K-12 Cape Cod Art Students, now - April 6, 10 am - 5 pm: The exhibition, an annual event, is a collaborative effort between the museums and the Cape Cod and Islands Art Educators Association, whose members teach art in public, private and charter schools from Falmouth to Provincetown. No other CCMA show encourages so many budding artists, attracts so many proud grandparents or sparks such amazement over the caliber of art education in Cape schools.

Abstract Expressions: Doug Johnson, now - April 20 with a Gallery Talk on April 3, 2 pm: Over the past decade, Cape Cod artist Doug Johnson has worked in a style inspired by the New York School - the post-World War II avant-garde art movement that held sway through the 1950s. He currently owns and operates the Doug Johnson Gallery in Orleans. In addition to painting Johnson has worked with clay, photography, printmaking and collage.

In Search of Lost Time: Paintings by George Nick, April 3 - May 18 with an Opening Reception on April 10, 5:30 - 7 pm: Part of CCMA's Over the Bridge exhibitions, this exhibit gives Cape art-lovers the opportunity to view 18 works by a prominent Boston area artist who's won national recognition for his realist paintings. His fidelity to such subjects as Back Bay exteriors, vintage aircraft and automobiles, and sun-splashed interiors is coupled with a spirited handling of print and a gift for discovering refreshingly distinctive points of view.

Eli Mark: Pine Sand, Ocean: Outer Cape Designs, April 3 - May 4 with an Opening Reception on April 10, 5:30 - 7 pm: Self-taught artist Eli Marsh (1892-1976) repeatedly expressed his strong sense of design and rhythm while capturing the starkly beautiful landscape near his Wellfleet home. Pine, Sand, Ocean will give an intimate look at about 18 of his oils, watercolors and pen-and-ink washes, dating form the late 1940s through the end of his life. Related Event - Gallery Talk by Richard Bump on Eli Marsh Exhibition, April 10, 2 - 3 pm: As a family friend of the Marshes, Bump has taken on the responsibility for caring for a large portfolio of Eli Marsh's work which he discovered stored in a horse barn on the family property in Wellfleet.
