Learn More About Artist Bobby Baker!

Artist Statement

"My photographic art is inspired by, and most often of, the ocean and coastal life. I am best known for my black and white work, which Shutterbug Magazine in describing it wrote, "His monochrome images soar off the screen with crescendos that almost let you hear the surf and be swept along with it."  You will also find color photographs in my portfolios, as subject and mood will dictate whether my image will be B&W or color.

I have spent most of my life in the arts, many years as a professional musician, and some time writing, before dedicating my creativity to photography. I found it interesting that in a recent magazine review of my work it was written that my photographic art possessed a "musical nature." I had never really thought of my work in that manner, but I think it's great if one finds a musicality woven into my photography. I also publish a 5-time award winning monthly email art newsletter/blog that highlights my latest work, activity in galleries and other art related news.

The foundation for my photographic work began in the late 70's as an assistant to a Palm Beach, Florida event photographer. I still have that complete 35mm kit from my early Palm Beach days, although I now use modern day Nikon gear. The majority of my work is created on Cape Cod. The Cape is a very special place to me. It has an amazing warm light that I love to work with and capture - and in general has a "vibe" that I can't find anywhere else. I find it comfortable, yet inspiring; a never ending source for my eye and mind whether a cold February morning, or a sizzling August afternoon.

In a bit of a different twist from my coastal photography, I attended the SXSW event the last few years in Austin, Texas. In a photojournalistic look at the annual festival I worked to capture the unique atmosphere of this experience in addition to the very cool surroundings of Austin. My work in Austin has been recognized in publications and allowed me to combine music and photography and create some of my favorite non-coastal work."

Baker's award winning photographic art has been widely published in magazines, books, websites, calendars, and his limited edition prints have been collected and exhibited in galleries and private collections nationally. His work has also been featured by the Office of Massachusetts Travel and Tourism and Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce. The Providence (RI) Journal wrote, "Bobby Baker is one of New England's best coastal photographers." Shutterbug Magazine called his work "remarkable photography."

Bobby's work is represented locally on the Cape at Gallery 463 in Chatham and his distinctive art will be featured in a summer solo show at Gallery 463 in August. He has been awarded Copley Artist status by the Copley Society of Art in Boston and Master Artist status by the Cape Cod Art Association. He invites you to follow him on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and to connect on LinkedIn. To see more of his work and to learn more about Bobby Baker, please visit: bobbybaker.com.
