Beginning with different weekly exercises that simplify the understand of both the skeletal system and the muscular structure of the human figure, you'll learn to build drawings inside and out. The workshop also covers different drawing techniques and materials that reveal the possibilities within line and tone. You are encouraged to internalize this information and nurture your own drawing styles in order to produce several complete, full-figure, long pose drawings.

PAAM Members' Free Workshop: Watercolor Workshop with Traci Harmon-Hay, January 11, 9 am - noon: This watercolor workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate students. Traci will set up a still life, consisting of a number of objects, which may be depicted as a large painting, or two smaller pieces representing part of the arrangement. Traci will demonstrate by painting on Arches 300 lb. hot press watercolor paper. This paper has a smooth surface, which allows the water to bleed and create its own spontaneous patters as well as blending color. It's thickness also keeps the piece from buckling and warping your finished project. At the end of the workshop, there will be a critiquing of the group's work.

Ninth Annual Voices of Peace Poetry Contest

The Veterans for Peace, Cape Cod - Corporal Jeffrey M. Lucey Chapter 041 invites submissions for their 2014 Voices of Peace Poetry Contest, with a hard deadline on March 28 by 5 pm.

The poetry contest is open to all Cape & Islands writers. Each contestant may submit only one poem, no more than 50 lines, rhymed or free verse. Poems can be hand-written or composed on a computer and printed on an 8 1/2 x 11 vertical page.

Poems should focus on:
  • thoughts of peace and the abolition of war, hate, or violence
  • what can I do to help make a peaceful world for all
  • some of the ways war can be avoided
  • inner peace
  • how we become peaceful within ourselves so that we can face the "other person" with mercy and forgiveness
  • examples of nonviolent attitudes and actions that lead to friendship, negotiation, social justice and peace.
Poems submission pages should be in the following format.
At the top: poem title, author's name and grade, and the poem
At the very bottom of the page: author's name, poem title, grade, name of school, town, teacher's name, address, phone number and e-mail. (This information will not be published, but we need it to contact the winners.)

Winners will be selected from 14 categories from grades K-12 and adults. All winners receive an awards certificate, and a published book with all the poems, and are invited to read their poems at a public gathering at the South Congregational Church, 565 Main Street, Centerville on May 3 at 10 am. Entries should be sent to: Veterans for Peace, PO Box 102, West Hyannisport, MA 02672.
