The House of Representatives today voted to approve the American Health Care Act, a bill that the CBO said would lead to approximately 24 million people losing coverage by 2022 and threatens protections for pre-existing conditions created by the Affordable Care Act.

This bill is a disaster for Californians - endangering health care for millions of people covered by Medi-Cal and Covered California and representing a blow of tens of billions of dollars to the state budget. To make matters worse, it was members from our state who cast the deciding votes that pushed AHCA across the finish line. All 14 Republican members of Congress from California voted in favor of the bill.

So, what's next?

In the coming days, many people involved the #Fight4OurHealth campaign will be holding accountability events targeting California Representatives who voted for the bill. It's important to keep up the pressure on these members to signal to that constituents are paying attention and votes have political consequences.

The bill will be forwarded to the Senate and we will have another opportunity to stop this bill. The CBO must score the bill before a vote, which could come in the next few weeks. We will offer opportunities to get involved as the process continues.

Call Recap

On our call, we heard from Evan Minton, who is the plaintiff in a lawsuit brought by ACLU challenging anti-transgender discrimination by Dignity Health.

The lawsuit is being brought in state court, and if successful would find that Dignity violated California law prohibiting discrimination in health care based on a patient's gender identity, and would prevent future discrimination.
